Does it matter where I build a branch office, does it need to be near anything?

Build furthest away from your storehouses.

Doesn't matter about it's position, just so long as it's out of the way of your production buildings.
I generally put my barracks, branch office, provisions house and tavern in the bottom of the area you first start.

The big building with the pink/ red roof is the Branch Office btw, Jools.

Hi Jools, the Branch Office performs on it's own. You can place it everywhere you want.

Agree with Marlock, is also possible.

What they don't tell u is that the Mayers-house functions/works-like a Storage-facility.
This means that u can build all your buildings around Storage-facilities anywhere on the map, and create a nice looking Town near the Mayers-house.
However, around the Mayers-house there is a lot more space, so people typically build there ^^
