I noticed on the opening screen that "everyone" has been sent compensation items, including 1000 gems - where are they? I haven't received anything!?!?!?!

Same here. But then I figured it out...that you may have started the game after a specific date -
Lets say the compensation items received...December 5 and you created an account; 7 of December.
Thats how I see it, with logic!

Then I go klick on your name and found out that is not the problem in your case. Sorry!
