View Full Version : [Guide] Efficient Building Placement
Hey there.
I recently started spending some time on the settlers online. At the start of the game I was wondering how to place my buildings. I tried to look up tutorials on youtube or the forums, but apparently these tutorials did not exist.
This made me go into theorycraft mode and I've decided to make my own tutorial.
What I've seen a lot of people do is just randomly place their buildings. Which can be devastating to your daily production.
I will be doing a couple of tutorials. (they should be quite self explanatory)
The 2nd and 3th video should be the most interesting to most of the players. The later videos go into more specific details (Wood Production, Copper Production etc.) with usefull tips and examples.
Tutorial 1: Production Time Calculation
This video will show how the production time of workshops is calculated. It's pretty basic and a lot of people will allready have found this out by themselves. I'd advise these people to skip to the 2nd video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRbDp-xddMk&context=C30b7a7dADOEgsToPDskJJJxXFk8eHc9wpb1sX3pdW
Tutorial 2: Efficient Building Placement
This video will show how to efficiently place buildings on the map in general. And give examples that everyone can use as soon as they have acces to a storehouse. Which should be possible within a day if I'm correct. It also includes some other general tips.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bUHFKiVTxg&feature=plcp&context=C36d68f6UDOEgsToPDskKEV4xSZsAKCchORmZXp9T0
Tutorial 3: Production Chaining, Where to Place Which Building
This video will show you where to place which building from the production chains. Follow this guide and you'll never suffer from over or underproduction of by themselves useless goods like grain, wood logs or ores.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-96H8RxDtWA
Tutorial 4: Resource Collector Production Time
This explains the three categories of Resource Collectors. It is probably very unentertaining, but it's a necessary step to have a full understanding of how to make an efficient production chain that involves resource collection. Good news it's only 2 minutes. :P
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNp7Hg-AeF4
Tutorial 5: Optimizing Wood Production
This tutorial explains how to optimize your wood production. I will also show you some examples of efficient woodcutter placement and workshops. Also don't hesitate to post your own efficient woodcutter placement! Enjoy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAb-5R678dI
Tutorial 6: Optimizing Copper Production
This tutorial will give you some guidelines on how to set up your copper production chain. Also a choice is offered between having 3 and 6 copper mines, which advantages and disadvantages.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bT3xAxxUaXI
Update: (New Video)
Tutorial 7: Optimizing Grain Production
This tutorial will give you an introduction on grain production chains.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYr3ycJnsyE
Tutorial 8: Optimizing Stone/Marble Production
This tutorial will mainly focus on giving examples of where you can place your stone/marble production.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smzjiFmmeKs
Please tell me if you found it helpfull or if you found it not helpfull also feel free to say so. I'm all open to discussions. I see this more as a way to start a discussion on how to place buildings.
If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Also if you want to know when new tutorials are released, it's probably the easiest to subscribe to the youtube channel. I will only post Settlers Online Tutorials on this channel.
Also be sure to check out this awesome map made by Dynuel!

Nicely explained Sagesmurf, i see many people just throw things down as well, i guess some just don't care :P. anyway ive been using the normal square placement seeing i didn't theocraft times from the start for 100% optimization, either way it's only seconds of profit in the end i guess. In the future we can move buildings so i'll optimize it then haha.
These tutorials look very promising and very good. But when I build buildings, I have another rules. I always build buildings, which are related to each other, in one area. What I mean is that players should have special areas for wood, for producing bread and beer ond so on. First of all, it is easier to manage these buildings and second of all, it looks pretty damn good, when you have windmill next to many farms and the smell of fresh bread is everywhere :) or an area filled with wood cutters, sawmills and foresters :) This is what I mean:
http://img859.imageshack.us/img859/6089/tsowoodsmall.th.png (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/859/tsowoodsmall.png/)
You can also make tutorials about good and bad building strategies, e.g. a lot of people do not know, that the actual time (without traveling) to produce one piece of wood is 1min30s, but actual time to produce one piece of tree is 2min15s. This means that you have to have more foresters than wood cutters. And so on. My point is, that players should do a little math and calculate how much of what they produce. You can make tutorials about that :)
Nicely explained ! Good job :) Carry On ! I hope to see more of your work.

Oh My God, it's magical!
Priceless.
Thanks for the great guide, did not know there was this much focus needed on production time. Even if you can only shave off mere seconds, within days, weeks, even months, think about all the 'free' recources you would get from it.
Great guide!

He guys, as I was messing around myself with this great idea, I found this really good spot in the left most part of sector 6, near the river.
While I was applying my brilliant Microsoft Paint skillz, I did found out however, that there is an even more efficient place to put your store house.
The first suggestion:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/Merik/BuildingEfficiency.jpg
I'll upload the second (even more efficient one) in a sec.
[EDIT]
Here is the second try:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/Merik/Buildingevenmoreefficient.jpg
[EDIT2]
In my enthousiasm for efficiency, I made a grave mistake. The bottom 4 '8s' are ofcourse '12s'. And the '12s' in the middle is '16s'.
Still, EVEN MORE EFFICIENT!

I do exist, honest. ;)
Hey guys, it's cool to see your positive reactions. Also cool to see that some people allready started experimenting with building patterns.
I've released a new tutorial today, which basically is about "Where to place Which Building". Be sure to check it out!
I do exist, honest. ;)
Haha I corrected it. Quite a coincedence I guess, lol.
This topic should be sticked - its very helpfull and Sagesmurf is making very good job here

really really helpful info here... when moving buildings comes i will definately use this info :D ... thanks
Just a short note. I have exams on Monday and Wednesday, so I won't be posting any tutorials untill those are finished.
I still plan on making them tho so stay tuned.

Interesting Thread!! Can't wait till we get to move our buildings, I have lots of moving to do lol
I fount this spot in sector 7, 1 spot can't be build on, but a decent spot anyway :)

Nice one there. Found the exact same one as well, which is kind of ironic. This a very good spot for getting hardwood cutters up, cause the trees are right in the middle of your base. Especially on the left side, 10 and 6 spot. Because the cutters have low production time (compared to the others in the chain) they have to be very close to the storehouse. As well as the trees themselves.
Maybe it's good idea to map out all the good spots on the map, comparable to the resources map from other guides.
Anyone would be interested in that?

A few things to remark,
- Sometimes its not usefull to optimize a particular production, but a chain production. Because you dont want to produce maximum wood(low end of chain), but bronze weapons(high end of chain) for example. So maybe it would be better to start backwards, optimize bronze weapons/coal and find out how much wood you really need.
In that respect the ratios 3-2-2 dont work for wood/coal etc.

Would be cool to see chains together in a block yeah :P

Not quite true. Wood can be converted for hardwood planks, therefor its useful ;)

Why dont invest in hardwood chains then? Maximizing wood/sawmills in order to convert them to planks is counter productive.
(Unless someone has done all the calculations and can prove me wrong)
You should produce as much wood you really need. Of course that means that you will have a slight surplus at the end of the day.
This surplus, later on, is useless. You can convert it to hardwood etc.

Uhuh that's one way of looking at it and I can see your point. If you'd ask me tho it makes a lot more sense to seperate them like this. For example next tutorial will be on optimizing copper production. Doing the wood step first makes it a lot easier to understand and by your logic I'd have to explain how to place woodcutters in 2 videos in stead of one, sounds like overkill information to me. If anything optimizing bronze production is a step forward in my opinion.
Also the ratios always matter. If you're gonna need 4 coking plants in bronze production, you're gonna need 4 woodcutters. No exception to the rule. And the coking plant can always be far away from the storehouse(12 spots). Main thing is that people should combine both tutorials to optimize. If they're too lazy to watch 2 video's then whatever.
I'm just providing a framework.
In that respect the ratios 3-2-2 dont work for wood/coal etc.
My points here is that someone would need more wood in order to keep up with an optimized coal production.
For example if we want to optimize bronze swords, it wouldn't be wise to place them at 6secs spot. Instead we can place coal at 6-8 secs, and a bit further the smelters/bronze. In order to do that we would need a bit more wood.
-In that way, we optimize the coal-bronze productions offering a slight speedup.
-Optimizing wood-coal-bronze would require more licenses.
-Optimizing wood, then coal, then bronze(placing each one further away) would result in slower bronze.
Maybe i am wrong here, and the last one is better even though its slower.
I will try to do some calculations and we will see which one seems better.

Never mind, I'm the one being [removed] here. I've been thinking about what you said for a while and you actually do have a valid point here. I've done the maths assuming that you would place the woodcutters on the 6 and 10 spots and still have an average production time of 1:54 (1:30 +2*6+2*6, this is hard to accomplish, but still do-able) and also place the coking plants on 6 spots which gives the following production time of 3:24. (3:00 + 4*6.)
Conclusion in this scenario is: You need 9 coking plants if you have 10 woodcutters.
Here are are some notes I've made while calculating.
3:24 6:48 10:12 13:36 17:00 20:24 23:48 27:12 30:36 34:12
3:48 7:36 11:24 15:12 19:00 22:48 26:36 30:24 34:12
So in case you will need 9 coking plants for your production chains it's worth placing them on the 6 spots and this will improve your production by a reasonable amount. Most people will however prefer the superior coal mines over coking plants.
My sincere appoligies for being such a whiny [removed] about it. :p

Has anyone made a map yet ( like this one https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/hiye1oQ8qfGH6D8CAe98Ag?feat=directlink ) that shows where you can and cannot build? Would perhaps be useful for identifying the best spots for placing Storehouses and setting up Resource gathering and production chains.

I'm not sure anyone has. I don't think so tho, maybe on german forums? But yeah it's a good idea. At this point I don't plan on making a map that's this detailed. (It would take probably like 12 hours or more to make a map like this and it's tedious and borring)
At least I do plan on making a map of all the efficient building spots that I know off, in which sugestions by other people can be added (of course giving them the credits for it). I've developped a pretty good method to identify good spots and will start on the map once I have conquered all of the areas (I don't have area 9 atm).
Thank you for your work Sagesmurf.
Will we see the placement for copper industry soon?

I dont think is posible to make a good building pattern in zone 8, unless you want to sacrifice one building license for one storehouse, to make the marble production time eficient, but the question is, do you realy need so much marble?

I realize you have farms in the way, but aren't the two 8, and two 12 spots infront of the mayors house worth maybe moving your farm fields for ?

True, but I also like that there are 5 iron ores (3 of which has a good placement to 3 marble ores). Do I need all those resources? Don't know as I'm only lvl 25 though I think I do need it atm at least.
"Oh Smurf, where do i place ma iron minezz?!" :P

Love this guide so far but, would there be a chance you could create a list/chart/table of the "ideal" locations for each building (Bakery = 6, Coking = 12 etc)??
is their a thread where someone has posted where all off these positions are?

And map grids - credit for that goes to unknown player from Ger. forum, I was lucky enough to find it (I don't speak German so I just clicked on all links that I saw there lol) - my only credit is to link / post it here after I've searched this whole forum for that particular link (and failed to find it).

Already linked that in another thread, but it fits here =)
I've been trying to find layouts with Sagesmurf's pattern and I've found a few that are quite decent, here they are:
Sector 2 In this pattern you can include a firwood production chain at the right, similar to the one that is posted in tutorial 5 here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAb-5R678dI), right after the woodcutters and forresters at the right, 3 farms can be placed, example here (http://i39.tinypic.com/10dfp08.png) , 18, 14 and 16 seconds spots from top to bottom. And another thing, i tried to move the 2 above 16 seconds a bit to the left and it seems you can get them to 14 seconds like that, you can place other farms on them, your choice, example here (http://i42.tinypic.com/ncmsmg.png)
http://i41.tinypic.com/165ov8.png (http://i41.tinypic.com/165ov8.png/)
Sector 6 I tried various spots to place the storehouses here, this one seemed best, of course you dont have to build 2 storehouses.
http://i41.tinypic.com/4rdwsl.png (http://i41.tinypic.com/4rdwsl.png/)
Sector 7 In this pattern here, a hardwood production can be set at the left/right side, build farms, or if you want, both combined.
http://i41.tinypic.com/aucpbs.png (http://i41.tinypic.com/aucpbs.png/)
Sector 8 In this sector, two storehouses can be combined if you have the building licenses.Regarding the marble masons ive built here, they're only put as a suggestion.
Remade the whole sector, if you still want to compare it to the old one, here (http://i43.tinypic.com/nlsyue.png/) it is.If you want to make your own, found a screenshot here (http://www.siedlertools.de/w/images/e/e1/Zeiten_Raster.png) that shows in detail the times that settlers spend on the roads between buildings, explained by sagesmurf in his first video as well.
http://i43.tinypic.com/2db9g7p.png (http://i43.tinypic.com/2db9g7p.png/)
I realize that some people have already found these patterns, but it seemed best to have them posted here for the new players and of course those that haven't found them that show interest in the production times. Cheers and have fun.

Now this a very nice guide (and comments too), helped me immensly. I still do have a question though, how do I go about placing meat/sausage production chain? And is it worth it at all to start producing sausages on lvl 21, baskets do cost quite a lot.
I use sectors 2,3 and 9 to place hunters, and about the placement, 12 seconds or 14,your choice. This is possible if you check the images and videos posted on this thread to determine where storehouses can be placed to obtain such placement. As for the butchers 10 or 12 seconds; of course these are only the ones i use, aren't really mandatory, if you cant place many buildings, you can choose 8 seconds spots, like i said, your choice. Hope it proves useful :)
Thanks this is really helpful but I sadly did not discover this forum until too late, I have my buildings all over the place and there does not appear to be a facility to move them once placed?
they said they will implement it, i hope soon enough because i have several that need moving as well

Hey Smurft thx for your input. It is a very useful waste of time!
This is what i did
Basic setup proposal for the tutorial, based on what i did. This setup is meant to be constructed by the time when level 16 is reached.
I welcome constructive criticism and advice.
a) a sustained inflow of pine planks:
4x pine sawmill
2x pine cutter
4x pine forester
b) a sustained inflow of stone
2x stone deposit
5x mason
c) slow but regular inflow of tools
1x copper mine
1x tool maker
1x copper smelter
1x coking plant
1x pine cutter
2x pine forester
d) adequate inflow of bronze swords
1x copper mine
2x bronze smith
2x copper smelter
3x coking plant
3x pine cutter
6x pine forester
e) sustained inflow of brew
1x brewery
2x farm
2x wheat filed
1x well
d) adequate buff availability:
2x fisher
1x provisions house
e) bows (speculated)
1x bow maker
2x pine cutter
4x forester
f) bread (speculated)
1x bakery
2x farm
2x wheat field
2x mill
1x well
Watch your tools count. Do daily quests. Send out explorer to search for treasure once u mapped everything you can.
Doing it like this took me about 24hours to get to level 16, almost at 17 (need 41 more xp for 17). My buildings were "poorly" placed but near the storage . Only used main center and one storehouse. Was considering if i should use more storehouses for better efficiency...like about two more for the above setup.
Speculated means i did not spend enough time to test it.
What comes next i guess is the current setup upgrade or just letting the game run for some time so resources are accumulated for further expansion.
Game looks nice for beta version. I hope later on more "choices" and flexibility will be added.

Thank you SageSmurf. Wish I had this before I jumped in with both feet. I have set up replenishment areas and then just placed wod cutters to clear the rest of the areas. Now at level 22 but game getting very slow.
Thanks again. great videos.

Where is the tavern in that big map? Nothing on that map looks anything like what the level1 tavern I'm supposed to place. Does it need to be near the storage, or not?
Nicely done taking someone's work, paste it together and not even bothering to ask for permission, that's how people are these days :/

Jemmster, you can place your tavern wherever is convenient for you, the distance to storehouse does not influence its performance.

Thank you for the great maps.
Is there any tips for efficient (and pretty) location for a larger buildings?
such as watermills (and maybe friary)?
http://i.imgur.com/jMi3Zwx.jpg
Here's a map I made up for zone 9 that I thought would be a good place to set up a self contained silo and farming area (as I don't really care for the gold mines all that much).
Everything above the line utilises the top field, and everything below the line utilises the bottom field.
The numbers are the total travel times for either building to do it's thing in regards to their respective field.
Below the line, set up silos in a 36, 36, 44, 60, 60. Set up Farms in a 28, 44, 52, 52, 60. If you feel it's too far, optionally you can drop one of the 60 second silos and farms to keep it equal overall. Both groups have exactly equal total travel time (236 for all 5 of either type), so the field will never deplete.
Above the line, set up silos in a 52, 36, 36, 44. Set up Farms in a 28, 36, 44, 60. Equal walking times (total is 168 for all 4 of either type), the field will never deplete.
And that's about it.
1 storehouse, 2 fields, 9 farms, 9 silos, timings all match up for the fields to remain constant.
To ensure it's accuracy I let the field in the top section on my island drop to 162 wheat. It hovers up and down slightly as the different timings occur, but overall it has stayed steady for several weeks now.
As further options, there's a 60 and a 68 left above the line, you could pop a farm and silo in these respectively, but I wasn't happy for things to go over 60 seconds.
Similarly, there's a 68 and 76 left over below the line you could do the same with, but again, probably too far.
Also be sure to check out this awesome map made by Dynuel!

Would be nice to have that map back, wish I had made a copy.
All of http://www.bartpolski.co.uk/ has gone missing, I want the Resource map back rather badly too. :(

Any updates/new insights on this ? I've "drawn" the spots on my map ... saving up resources to move my buildings ...

Here's a map I made up for zone 9 that I thought would be a good place to set up a self contained silo and farming area (as I don't really care for the gold mines all that much).
Everything above the line utilises the top field, and everything below the line utilises the bottom field.

Followup on my image from last page, here's the final product for my Silos and Farms in sector 9. Two of the spots (the silo and farm next to eachother to the left of the store) needed to be swapped, their travel distance changed based on the buildings going in front of them.
This arrangement works out pretty good.
The silos on the left are technically 4 seconds quicker than the farms, so like once a day it will be full and the silo will wander off elsewhere to fill, which sounds fine to me.
