Going to start using this thread to collect together answers to the most common questions on the help channel... When there's enough, I'll reorganise it better
Mine refills can be obtained as follows:
In trade (after you get trade office at level 12)
Gemshop / Merchant
Treasure hunts with explorer
Adventure loot
Daily rewards
But don't panic about your mine running out. Most you simply want to let run out then send your geologist to find it again. Gold mines are expensive to build and upgrade, though. So it's often worth pausing them before they run out and refilling them when you can before letting them go into operation again. Some people like to refill iron mines, too.
Here's what refills look like in the trade office. I don't think this is a good price for them, though!

If you need to buff someone (e.g. for a quest) or want to receive a buff, the best way is to ask friends or guild-mates.
If you have no friends or guild-mates, ask in trade chat.
To get to trade chat, type
/joinchat global-3
or
/j global-3
Then write something like: "want to swap three baskets, whisper me" or, in trade chat shorthand, "WTS 3 baskets, /w"
You won't have much luck swapping fish buffs!
Don't ask for buffs in the help channel. That's not what it's for.

The economy overview quests such as “Making Production Chains Perfect”, “Important Pinewood”, and “Look Out For the Tools” aren't as hard as people think. It's just about balancing your economy to achieve all the quest requirements at the same time.
The quick solution to solving these quests is to try the following three things in order:
1. Stop buildings you don't need
2. Buff buildings where you need more short term production
3. Build more buildings or upgrade existing ones to cover long terms shortfalls
If you don't understand these suggestions, then read on for a more detailed explanation. The quests are about learning to understand your economy, so if you're struggling with these quests then you should read it all carefully!
First, knowing how to use the economy overview is REALLY useful. Here's an excellent guide if you're not sure: http://forum.thesettlersonline.com/threads/20636-Guide-Economy-Overview
Then you need to understand what the quest is asking you do do. They all give you three or four production requirements which you have to meet at the same time.
"Have a production value of at least 360 every 12 hour(s) for resource x" means you have to be producing at least that amount of the resource.
"Have a production value of at least 0 every 12 hour(s) for resource x" is a bit unclear. It means that you need to be producing more of the resource (eg pinewood logs, bronze etc) than you are using, or producing exactly the same amount as you use.
It DOES NOT mean you can just have zero production and zero consumption - stopping ALL your buildings won’t work. You have to have some production going on, which must balance out.
It also DOES NOT mean that you have to wait 12 hours for the quest to complete. The economy overview averages current production out over 12 hours, but updates almost immediately.
Here's me producing exactly as much bronze as I am using. You don't HAVE to get exactly zero, but it is possible!

Once you've undersood these things, there are then three steps for completing the quest. Try them in this order:
1. Stop/Sleep buildings you don't need
For example, the quest might say "produce at least 360 pine planks every 12 hours" AND "produce at least 0 pine logs every 12 hours" . Two sawmills might be enough to produce 360 planks, so you can stop any others that you've built to reduce your log consumption. You can also stop your bowmaker or your cokers if the quest doesn't need you to be producing bows or coal.

2. Buff buildings where you need more short term production
Buffs double output but don't increase input. So if you're a little bit short of the quest requirements for one resource, buffing the buildings that produces that resource could help without hurting your output of any of the other resources.
Here's me buffing a cutter and stopping my bowmaker, which JUST gave me a positive pine log production!

3. Build more buildings or upgrade existing ones to cover long terms shortfalls.
Normally options 1 and 2 are enough, but if they don't work, option 3 is the only way to complete the quest. For example, if you need to produce 2000 pinewood planks every 12 hours, but only have 1 pinewood sawmill, there is no way you are EVER going to be able to complete the quest without building or upgrading sawmills. So build another sawmill. But then you might need to build more cutters to supply them with logs and more foresters to plant trees. That's the way the game works!
As part of your upgrading routine, don't forget that large walking times between buildings and storehouses can really reduce your production rates. An "upgrade" can include moving the building closer to a storehouse, or building a new storehouse near to a cluster of buildings. If you're short by just 10-20 units of a resource, this can make all the difference.
Don't forget to check the effects of stopping/starting/buffing/building different buildings in the economy overview or in the quest window.

There are several types of quests
Main quests (part of the tutorial)
Side quests (bonus tutorial quests)
Guild quests (for people in a guild of more than 10 members)
Daily quests (given once each day)
and
Waiting quests
The most common reason people can't complete a quest is that it's a "Waiting quest". Waiting quests are "waiting" for the previous day's Daily quest or Guild quest to be completed. You cannot complete them until you finish or cancel the quest that it's waiting on.

You can only add someone as a friend if you're on the same server

You cannot change servers. You can only start again on a new server either registering with a new email address or after asking support to delete your account on your current server.
Do one for: "My general has dissapeared with all my troops when I sent him to adventure..." and for "Where are my troops? Finished adventure, the generals returned but without my troops...ohh my..."
You know, the generals and troops being on star menu :) going to/returning from adventure
When an adventure is finished, all troops and generals return to your home island.
Troops assigned to a general return with that general in 30 minutes or 15 minutes for a battle hardened or veteran general
Troops NOT assigned to a general return with a troops transport that takes a couple of hours.

You population is made up of two things which you can control:
1. Your population limit - the maximum number of settlers you can have
2. You unemployed settlers - how many settlers are available for work
The number of unemployed settlers is displayed in the top bar. The population limit is shown in the population tooltip by hovering over the settler icon. You can also open up a storehouse to see you max population and current population.

To increase population limit you must build or upgrade residences or noble residences or place special buildings such as the white castle which are found on adventures.
The number of unemployed settlers increases over time at a rate of 1 every 15 minutes. You can increase this base rate with a love potion or a cheese sandwich from the merchant/gemshop. The village school independently produces 1 extra settler every 2 hours.
You can also increase the number of unemployed settlers by creating settlers in the provision house using bread. Click provision house -> resources tab -> wayfaring settler / settler family / retired bandits. These caches of settlers are stored in the star menu until you use them on the mayor's house. Stock up before going on a big adventure!

My most common reason for not being able to complete a quest is I cannot even start it - even though it is many levels below my current level and it is still locked! ! ! !
That's a bug, not included here since, hopefully, it will be fixed soon

If you want to see the all process, go to economy overview>resources>bronze. There you can see all production and you can balance out all productions. It's so much easier for me, anyway.
There is a single combined storage on your island, made up from the total space in your mayor's house plus all your storehouses. Resources can come and go from any storehouse or from the mayor's house as if there are wormholes connecting them all together.
To get more storage upgrade your storehouses or mayor's house. It is significantly more cost-effective to upgrade your storehouses to level 3 before upgrading your mayor's house. Also, when you start the game, you don't have enough storage space for the resources needed to upgrade your mayor's house.
The mayor's house does look very pretty when upgraded, though.
Mayor's house level ups
1 -> 2, costs 800 hardwood planks and 450 marble. +1,600 storage
2 -> 3, costs 400 coins and 450 marble. +1,500 storage
3 -> 4, costs 750 exotic wood planks and 900 coins. +3,000 storage
4 -> 5, costs 1500 Exotic Wood Planks and 1800 Granite. +4,000 storage
Storehouse level ups
1 -> 2, costs 120 Hardwood Planks & 100 Marble, +400 storage
2 -> 3, costs 300 Hardwood Planks & 150 Marble, +1,000 storage
3 -> 4, costs 500 Gold Coins & 300 Marble, +1,500 storage
4 -> 5, costs 500 Exotic Wood Planks & 300 Granite, +3,000 storage
So, upgrading a storehouse to level 3 costs 420 planks and 250 marble: 50% of the cost of the levelling the mayor's house to level 2, for 87% of the storage
Once all your storehouses are up to level 3, you can then start working on your mayor's house.
NOTE: Adventure classifications were redone at the end of 2014, with new icons on the mini picture which don't always match the descriptive text for the adventure. Some quests don't get completed when you might expect them to from the list below which matches that text.
Since it's impossible to know at this time whether it's a bug or a text error or what (since nobody at Blue Byte ever talks to us or ever admits a mistake) I find I can't be bothered to update this list and am leaving it here for posterity and as proof-positive that the developers are muppets.
Most adventures have a "type" associated with them. Click on an adventure in your star and the description will tell you its "type" if it has one. You can also hover over adventures in the merchant/gemshop and it will tell you what type they are.

EDIT: Just learned that you can see the type of an adventure by hovering over them in the merchant. It lists bounty hunter as a tutorial adventure. So we have a conflict... Since BH is definitely different from any other adventure, I've decided to put it back in the tutorial category.

NP! I'm not 100% sure but I've seen NO denial at any statements I've seen (in this and testforum) about this.
I'd specifically asked Gelbatron to check it worked with RttBN, which he has! I think that probably settles the matter for MSE

this was the first confirmation I'd had that they have been properly coded on the live servers
I've got very stuck on this game. I've still got several bandits camps & leaders to defeat & when I try (with 2 generals) I fail & have to spend days building up my army again. I keep running short of minerals & can't get a second gold smelter or mint or increase my population. I've spent a fortune on 'gems' just to make some progress. The 'have a production of > n amount' quests seem almost impossible as, if I can meet one criterion, I can't meet another - they seem contradictory - also if I achieve one criterion, I lose it trying to meet another on the same quest - they don't 'stick'. And it is so slow!!!
Please help as the new Tropico isn't available until the end of the month!!!

Thank-you. I don't normally think of myself as impatient but this is the first on line game I've played - I've loved earlier versions of Settlers, Anno etc without getting impatient but you can usually speed those up when you want to/
