View Full Version : lag
Apparently there's no thread for this issue
Blocks going wrong, the "Retreat" button completely useless unless you can afford to wait 10 secs, and during prime hours everything acts slow in general, sometimes taking more than 10 secs for a command to register!
Please do something about it soon
To prevent this topic is closed because blocking isn't supported by BB
3 generals are on their way to kill 3 different camps seperately.
This to SPEED up the adventure and NOT to save troops by blocking
General 1 goes into the camp and attacks, general 2 is being intercepted when general 1 already started the fight.
No intercept warning has been given, which would make sense since general 1 already started to fight the camp seconds before.
General 3 is walking very calmly to his target, intercept warning given when he passes the second camp and he won't retreat because the button doesn't work :o
( At that moment my mouse button clicks more than it can take, next moment the mouse has a free flying lesson through the living room )
Troops that shouldn't have been killed are being killed.
Lag ?
Maybe it is the same thing as a camp not going down, you can watch the fight still going for 3 minutes until you go to home island and move back to the adventure ?
Fight over and general back and ready to defeat a new camp btw :p
Maybe also the same thing as a general moving to the adventure in 10 min, while the other bhg takes the normal 15 ?
And maybe also the same thing as see no movement at all and then your general runs ?
Wouldn't make sense to put an hourglass above the general i guess :)
i would almost think the settler clock is bugged, if my clocks were doing things like that i would change the batteries :o
ibut...the mouse is still working
I have noticed something common to the worst lag situations, those where in particular your general sits in his tent, with a little walking icon above it.
Perhaps the eagle-eyed amongst you can confirm if this is the case for them too:
If you watch the bar at the bottom of your browser window, you will notice things like "waiting for 94.153.xxx.yy" or similar, which is the IP address of the Settlers servers. However, there is also "waiting for w01g04 or w02g02 or w03g01 etc..." at the front of the address to the servers (usually "thesettlersonline.something"), and this is the important one to watch for.
For the UK servers, w01 is Newfoundland, w02 is Northisle, and w03 Sandychav (different countries would have a different ending after the rest of this bit), but the really interesting bit (for me) is the g01, g02, g03 or g04 bit.
Each server has a number of copies, as backup, and to make sure the game can run almost continuously, so these change on a regular basis.
Now what I have observed is that the worst lag sessions are almost always g04, which suggests to me that either there is a physical problem with this particular server version (busted router switch, overloaded processors, failing hard drives for instance), which are making connection particularly problematical, or a little less likely, this particular copy has some kind of software corruption not present on the others.
When things are running smoothly, you barely have time to see these messages, I rarely notice the g01 and g02 versions, the g03 is slightly slower, but the g04, you can't miss it!
This also seems to tie in with the 'lag switch', where at certain times it almost seems that somebody has 'turned the lag off'. As the most noticeable of these occurs somewhen roughly between 10pm GMT and 3am GMT, I used to think that server load was the problem, and things were easing off as lots of people went to bed, but comparing heavy nights such as Friday/Saturday with quieter ones, and also seeing the same behaviour when there is barely a soul around, I looked for another possibility, and it seems to follow a switching of versions, so when we are transferred from g04 to one of the others, there is an instant and very noticeable performance boost.
It would really help if others could check my findings, is it the g04 version causing the worst lag?
Even if you find something different, it may still be helpful to eliminate what is causing this.
Thanks,
Nog.
Interesting. But nothing on my status bar while on the game. I'm using FF btw

Been fairly quick tonight, so it wouldn't show long enough to read.
It's when things get really laggy this comes into its own.
switching of servers might explain the server call failed messages when visiting friends or adventure islands
switching of servers might explain the server call failed messages when visiting friends or adventure islands
..and the "Server is busy" when accepting adventure invites
It should be seamless, but if, as I suspect, there is another underlying problem, you may well be right. I hadn't considered these, but it makes sense.
