View Full Version : To enhance Your gaming experience: A list of helpful features

Greetings fellow settlers!
Being an experienced Settlers Online player and a member of the largest guild in Sandycove, there are some features that I find annoying and slow. So, without further ado, here is a list of changes and features I would like to see implemented into the game in the future:

Smart rebuilding
Wheatfields and wells are now able to be rebuilt without going into the building menu and selecting the correct building and then placing it in the correct place.
Instead, just hover the mouse over an exhausted wheatfield or well and a little button pops up. Click on it and the game adds a new construction to the constructing queue. If your queue is full or you don't have the materials to rebuild it, the button is greyed out and unclickable.
In addition, if you hover your mouse over a depleted mine, you can select the small Geologist button. Click it and a dialog box pops up where you are able to select which Geologist you wish to send to rediscover a new deposit. This feature works great with the upcoming Science System.

http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/9836/wheatf.jpg
By clicking the wheat image on the Exhausted field, it's instantly added to the building queue.

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/3962/marbleu.jpg
Clicking on the Geologist icon brings you to a new menu.

http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/9107/searchfornewdeposit.jpg
Select which Geologist that will search for the new deposit.

Star Menu stacking
Say adieu to endless scrolling in the Star Menu. With Star Menu stacking, all resources, adventures, buildings, buffs and specialists are neatly stacked up so that there's only one stack of each item in the Star Menu. In addition, the game will feature a drag-and-drop if you still wish to keep multiple stacks of the same item. Simply click on a stack and then click on the Star Menu and a dialog will pop up, allowing you to specify the number of stacks and the number of items in each stack that you wish to create. Similarly, if you want to merge multiple stacks, simply drag a stack onto another of the same kind and they instantly merge into one.

Intelligent Star Menu handling
In addition to stacking, the items in the Star Menu which only has one destination (i.e. items which can only be added to the headquarters) no longer requires you to click on the headquarters. Instead, when clicking on such an item a dialog box pops up, asking you for the number of items you wish to add to your headquarters. All kind of resources as well as Love Potions, map fragments, you name it, will follow this new kind of handling.

Battle Control
This exciting new feature allows you to manage all your generals and their armies at the same time. Clicking on the new Army button, you will be greeted with a multi-layered window in which, on your left, you have all your generals in a list along with a radio box next to each and every one of them, more on that later. Click on one of them you can specify each general's army, both in the traditional slider way and by simply typing the number of troops you want to assign to each general. On the far right of the window, there's a counter which shows you the total number of assigned and unassigned troops.
On the bottom, the row contains familiar buttons such as Attack, Combat Preview, Transfer and Retreat but also the Send Army button, the OK and the Cancel buttons and the Assign Target button. The target button allows you to set a target for your General without dispatching him. After setting the target, the button changes into a Attack target button. Clicking the Cancel button now serves two purposes; both to cancel unwanted army assignment changes and to remove a picked target.
Now, the most useful feature in this new UI is the radio boxes. All orders you issue is carried out to all Generals which has the radio box checked. This allows you to assign troops to all Generals and only clicking OK once and to dispatch Generals with different targets simultaneously, effectively removing any issues with blocks that are messed up due to lag. You can also retreat all Generals that are currently in the field, see which General that would fare best against a camp with Combat Preview, dispatch a selected number of Generals to an adventure and so on. Such information would be displayed in a central information area. Of course, when you operate more than one General at once, a dialog box will pop up after issuing an order, asking you to confirm the use of all the checked Generals before the order is carried out.
To sum it up, Battle Control would revolutionize the combat part of the game!

http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/540/battlecontrol.jpg
The Battle Control UI allows you to easily manage all your Generals at once. With the Assign Target system, blocking will never again get ruined by lag. Of course you're able to rename your Generals just like your Geologists.

Favorite Buffing
Perhaps you have some buildings you always buff and some you don't? With this small new feature, you can simply click on a building and in the information menu tack a small box. After doing so, tiny clouds will hover the building while it's not being buffed, letting your friends know which buildings you prefer to have buffed. In addition to that, selecting a buff from your Star Menu and applying it to your headquarters will bring up a dialog box asking you if you want to spend # number of buffs (provided you have that many) on your Favorite buildings. Similary, using a buff on a friend's headquarters brings up the same box asking you if you want to spend # number of buffs on your friend's Favorite buildings.

http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/2404/favoritebuffing.jpg
The Coinage is checked as a Favorite but is not currently buffed, hence the clouds which are visible to you and your friends and guild mates.

http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/5130/favoritebuffing2.jpg
A dialog box asking you which kind of buff that you'd like to use.

Swap building positions
This is not a new feature but more of an extension of the Move building command. Now, when moving a building, you can select another existing building and the game will ask you if you want to swap the position of those two buildings for the fee of moving both buildings once.

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/4866/swapbuildings.jpg
A dialog box asking you which method to use to swap the position of the selected Farm and Hardwood sawmill.

Non-restricted production - Similar feature implemented 27/1/2015
Don't you just hate having create troops, buffs and alike in batches of 25? Well, no more! The traditional slider reaches its max when you run out of resources. You can also simply input the number of items you'd like to create, if the number exceeds what is possible with your resources, the game sets it to the max amount you're able to create. As simple as that! This change includes items created in the Barracks and the Provision house.
If you change your mind after starting the work on a very large batch, fear not, just click the cancel button as usual and all items that hasn't yet been created returns as resources while items that are already finished (without the batch being finished) is given to you as completed items.

Treasure search reward options - Implemented 6/5/2014
Do you have some 10-15 explorers returning each day with small chunks of resources that quickly fills up your star menu? This small feature allows you to select to have your treasure immediately sent to your storage instead of star menu. The choice of having it sent to your star menu still remains. Useful for non-produced resources such as granite, salpeter, titanium ore etc.

These are all the changes I propose for now, I might include more ideas later on. If you wish to see sketches of the features, try to convince me and I might make some.
Please, do try to criticize, praise or express your general concern for these ideas. If enough of you do so, it might be so that Blue Byte picks up one or two of the ideas. If you are part of a guild or similar, please forward the link to your comrades.

Cheers!

The rebuilding issue is always a problematic one. the fact that it's troublesome is the main selling point of silos and watermills (I doubt saving the few planks and stones per field or well is what motivates to invest thousands of gc to them). So if BB were to make rebuilding much easier for players, it would most likely lose sales on these premium buildings.

The star menu stacking would be a welcome feature. Also, the buffing scheme you suggest is in many ways like Tripi's Buff list suggestion which has accumulated tremendous support from fellow players. In addition it would be nice to see the provision house and the Barracks to work on larger batches on a single action. I might need 2000 recruits on an epic adventure. assigning them 25 at a time is just silly. Unlike the tediousness of rebuilding, this repetitive assigning of troops and buffs can't be eased even with gem investment.

I did not follow you completely through the whole battle control scheme. Maybe an illustration on that would be helpful? What I could pick up was the targeting of camps and then sending out all generals simultaneously to their targets. That at least would be a useful feature. How would the troop assignment be different to the current way though, apart from the ability to type in troops? And what were the justifications why the current method needs to be altered?

+1 on the number input when assigning an army to a general,
+1 on the selecting what buildings to buff, could also add marking of buildings for yourself and/or for others that visit your map, like red flags or something on them.

It would also be nice to be able to use any number when recruiting in barracks and making stuff in provision house, and not be limited to 25.

I completely agree with you guys that the 25 limit restriction should be lifted. I will add that suggestion to the original post later on.

Nice ideas, but Flash can't cope with what's being thrown at it now. (It wasn't designed for things like this).
Perhaps when we come out of 'beta', the full version will be written in something much more capable and sensible.

The reason people say +1 is because they count as "+1 to the idea"

Sadly as you are only a single user you can only add +1 to this, only way to add more than +1 is to mutli account, but as that is banned on same server, it's very unlikely.

So less of the spam please

Thanks,

Dear peck_ed,

It's clear that you have no clue what you are talking about, so I would like to provide you with the definition of spam hereby:
"Spam is the use of electronic messaging systems to send unsolicited bulk messages, especially advertising, indiscriminately. It is unsolicited for by the recipient."

I'll highligh some parts of it:
BULK: was my feedback in bulk? No, definitely not. It contained quite some zeros, but it was one comment.
ADVERTISING: unless you are seeing a hidden message in all the zeros perhaps, but otherwise not applicable either
INDISCRIMINATELY: there's nothing indiscriminately about it, I reacted on this thread and in particular on a comment of someone else.
UNSOLICITED: last time I logged on - no too long ago - I got the message "this game is still in beta, we would appreciate your feedback".

But, let's consider you a forum moderator for a second. It means that you should be aware what spam is.
That brings me to another reaction on your [removed] remark. Last time I checked, I was a (potential) customer. Could you explain to me why you consider feedback from your customers spam? I could imagine that you don't like the feedback, that you consider it too much feedback, that you would have given the feedback yourself in a different way, etc.
But spam? No, that's a mentality problem on your side; where's the 'customer is king' attitude?

Still, such an attitude can happen on a bad day. Telling it to your customer however is absolutely not done. Do you know that you are getting fired for it at my company? And I can tell you that my company didn't become world market leader in the banking and insurance market by having of a wrong customer approach.

May I therefore suggest that you tone it down a bit this time?

Hello MrBranch,

Please do not offend people.

This saves two clicks; opening the build menu and clicking on the wheatfield or well. Also, it seems to assume that you are replacing the wheatfield or well with an identical one. Would this feature allow you to choose the type of wheatfield or well you want to construct this time, or would it only be useful if you want to replace like with like?

In addition, if you hover your mouse over a depleted mine, you can select the small Geologist button. Click it and a dialog box pops up where you are able to select which Geologist you wish to send to rediscover a new deposit. This feature works great with the upcoming Science System.

Whilst this sounds quite fun, I can actually click on the star menu when I find a depleted mine, and send the Geologist out. This saves 1 click I think.

I feel that these features would add complexity to the hovering mouse mode, without actually adding much of great use to the game. You are saving a few seconds if that.

In addition to that, selecting a buff from your Star Menu and applying it to your headquarters will bring up a dialog box asking you if you want to spend # number of buffs (provided you have that many) on your Favorite buildings.

Will this feature also allow you to choose the number of buffs that you are spending on either your or your friends' buildings? For instance, if your friend doesn't have 19 buffs available, will they be able to choose 15 instead, or will they just be prevented from buffing you? Also, will it automatically grey out buildings where you have reached maximum storage capacity and a buff would be wasted?

Oh, and a general comment regarding all these features; would they be free or would they be premium features? It is going to take some programming to change all these elements of the game.....

While I do not know in what part of the game you are (which level), but on higher levels where you have a lot of wheatfields, wells and mines to replace every day, thus all these saved clicks really adds up. Also, wells and wheatfields are usually Medium Wheatfields and Deep Wells and you don't really want to place something else. But hey, maybe that's just me :)

Regarding the buff issue, if you don't have sufficient buffs available you won't be able to buff all buildings at the same time since if you did, would the buildings left out be selected at random? But hey, any improvements to the improvements are welcome :)

When I made this post in the first place there were no such thing as a premium account and it's not really my place to decide about it being premium or not. But hey, I would root for it to be available to all players.

i am just really pleased there is some serious consideration of ways to improve the game ..i have a pet peeve which i believe would be simple to achieve and of immediate benefit.
that when you show me my friends along the bottom of the page, please show me who is on line first. as simple as that .
i would like to know , who of my friends and guild members are actually on line without having to scroll through looking for them .
Wouldn't that make that one little thing simpler and more functional ?

ok another thing that would be fun i believe.
at the moment i can visit a friends island and buff any building that can be and top up fish food etc ..
I think it would be cool if i could also take a geologist with me who could find some marble or gold for my friend and then find his own way home :))
rather than have him / them sitting round my island being no use to anyone they could travel with me and do something useful.
i believe it would encourage a lot of goodwill in the game and more coperation .

You would be removing the incentive of buying a Jolly and giving them skills, not only that you would also be depriving them the bonus resource finds if their geo's are trained that way. I for one would be most unhappy if some well meaning person had sent their unskilled tavern geo's stomping all over my island. I would be even more less happier If I found out they had received the bonus resource finds.

I hate bumping my own threads, but reading about the upcoming achievement system I kinda lost even more faith in BB. It would be nice if the dev just took a quick look at the game suggestions sub forum every once in a while instead of trying to push out new features that nobody wants. So, if you liked my suggestions, give it a +1 or something to keep the thread alive so that the dev team might pick it up some day.
Again, sorry for the self bump but I feel it's necessary.

+1 from me as well, very well done and with images. Most of the suggestions have crossed my mind since i started playing this game and they would make many features so much more convenient, currently there are a number of incredibly annoying ones present.

Explorers: Tiny stacks clutter the mail, 100s of clicks needed to retrieve and place in star menu and into storage afterwards, 15 explorers. Outcome, my mail has 5 pages as of now, new mailing system does not even have "retrieve all" button.
Troop training: 25 each, 100s of clicks needed to queue the troops, 1.5-2ktroops, this is not a joke anymore. Outcome, i rarely do adventures.
Troop assignment to general: One of the worst possible, slider is just awful, it takes a long time to assign, highly annoying and inconvenient. As suggested, this should have an input field. Outcome, i rarely do adventures.
Rebuilding: I wont speak about this issue because while being highly tiresome and boring and requiring hours to rebuild, its still promotes sales.

Wow some brilliant ideas. Some of the User Interface changes you have suggested are so obvious I wonder why they were never implemented in the first place.
You have really spent a lot of time thinking these things out and designing the pictures....Maybe you should work for BB. I fear sometimes when writing games you can get caught up in the details of game balancing and new features and miss the obvious game interface improvements.
Well Done for doing this.

90% of these are quite easy programming changes that don't require a whole lot of work, although some would.
I especially like the idea of tagging your own buildings as "buff favourites" as this would be one of the most useful features mentioned, giving ALL players an easily recognisable sign for buffing. Many times the same quests appear, "Buff x friends buildings" as daily's or guild quest, this would make it so much easier to be productive while doing this, especially to friends/guild mates who are off-line at the time.

This game seems to have been designed to run best on Firefox, and, since changing to that from Explorer, I can honestly state that I have had far fewer crashes of Flash. It might be a good idea for those of you suffering heavily, to try changing browser. In addition to this, I also recommend using IOBit Advanced System Care 7, either the free, or, in my case, the commercial version. Both enhance my computing experience, and the Game Booster feature is a godsend, reducing the amount of "rubbish" using processor and memory facilities!!!

Bluebyte, PLEASE, PLEASE take a long hard look at these suggestions, and enhance player enjoyment instead of making it a drudge, as it is beginning to become.

Very good post indeed. I know for a fact some of the suggestions here have already been passed on, but I believe a reiteration is in order seeing the popularity of the ideas here. We are listening, but some things just take longer to implement, so keep suggesting new features and I will make sure your feedback is passed on.

One suggestion however: When you guys do a "+1" on such an ample suggestion, please specify which part of it you like. Since this thread had a lot of wonderful ideas, I assume most of you agreed with all of them, but please keep this in mind for future suggestions.

+1 Thanks

This could be mentioned already but I would like to have some sort of (even limited) buff stacking on important buildings like gold mine/coinage etc

Great suggestions in the first post by Erikber.
I would like to have a button "Unload all troops" somewhere if possible. That would be used to empty all garrisons on home island, or adventure island. Thank you. :)

I agree, that would be a simple little feature that could ease up the game. If you don't mind, I'll try to add that to the initial post so it'll not be lost, if I ever get the time ;)

Some great ideas. I really like the idea for training new troops with an arm of 8400 thats alot of clicking to rebuild recruits which is very boring.

As of 5/6/2014, BB has implemented the Treasure search reward option. It seems they finally listened :)

It appears the multiple stacks are finally being implemented. Maybe I should start playing this game again ;)

General's tranfer from point to point should be instant. Much time loss watching horse's walk.

Not prepared to give this idea the time of day.
