I've played Settlers for quite a while now and in that time numerous players have stopped playing the game for various reason's leaving lots of resources and buildings on their islands.
Why not set a time limit for inactivity whereby once the deadline has been reached the islands contents are auctioned off in a separate tab of the Trade Office?

What if the player was away for a certain amount of time beyond their control and they came back to an empty island? Not sure I'd be a fan of that
My first thought was a system where 1 gem was deducted from your account after 7 days inactivity. Once your stock of gems runs out your stuff is up for grabs. However on second thoughts it's not quite as simple as it appears at first looks. Tradable buildings are one thing but resources are more problematic, mainly due to the fact that not all resources are in storehouses. There is also the problem of what price would the items be sold at since no two trade offices put the same prices on saleable items. Given the potential complexity any such system would need you would probably be looking at a few years development before a workable system could be rolled out, let alone a player approved system.

So that's what happened to my island.. haha
(long time ago, solved already lol)
I have spent real money on this game and would be very unhappy if I came back after a period of inactivity to find my gems gone or my investment deleted.

Furthermore it would be difficult to reconcile with the proviso that the home island would never be attacked, even if PvP comes.
I need a holiday.
Not going if somebody is going to pilfer.
earn ur own gems IoI i went away for 6 months but i came back i wouId have not been very happy if my isIand had been ransacked pIus u wouId have a massive amount of new buiuIdings which wiII bring their prices down to nothing so why then buy gems? its not a money maker for BB thats for certain and wouId do more harm then good
i quit for a year but came back and have spent alot of real money on this game would be more then miffed if i came back to my island sold off

In the end your suggestion is counteractive to the very core element which balances the game: Resource drains.
Things continually need to get introduced into the game just to match the consumption thereof.
If island contents (buildings / resources) would easily transfer from -especially wealthy- players to others when an island becomes inactive for a prolonged amount of time, the drain of these items would severely reduce, which would essentially destroy the game.
You have to think that there are high level players with 200 Frozen Manors, 150 Improved Storehouses - and over 1 million coins, granite and beans ... if these things would easily get back into circulation, it would do terrible, terrible things to the balance ...
