Regarding Combat

I m finding this game's combat little confusing!!!!! (too much)

Can anyone please clarify 2 things for me???

Does they mean...... attacking power / defensive power :-

1. Hitpoints
2. Damage

attacking power means the damage done to enemy.
defensive power means the limit of damage it can withstand/survive.
