Is there a maximum amount of buildings you can have on the island

yes there is: amount of free space on the island limits max number of buidings, cause at the moment I could reach at least 355 building licenses, but there are many useful buldings not requiring licenses.

There's room for about 550 buildings. I once had 500 working settlers, (forum.thesettlersonline.com/threads/17056-On-Going-Contest-Pic-of-the-Week/page48) and then there were a bunch of houses and fields as well. And room for floating residences has been added since.

With different sizes for improved storehouses, friaries, dark castles etc it can vary a bit how manny buildings you can squeeze onto your Island.

p.s. funny, autocorrection wont let me write Island with an i. Probably someone thought "is land, must write with I".

335 max licenses from merchant

145 come from clearing your island and you get 10 when you reach level 32.

There are 180 licenses for gems from the Merchant, 18 packs of 10, which makes the standard 335.

Then the 15, 3 packs of 5, for Beanstalks in "Epic" from level 43. Each of the two football events offered a single pack of 5 but if you missed them they're no longer available though they may be back.

Licenses are a limited item, anything in the shop with the red *splat* xSomeNumber has a purchase cap and can't be traded.

If you have things like Noble Residences you've built from the regular build menu using licenses you can replace them with Noble Deed (residences) bought either in trade for game resources or from the shop, and recover some licenses.
