As it happens, I do have some experience with, and knowledge of, game development. However, this is an obvious ad-hom - it has no bearing on the actual argument. No matter how big a task it is, surely you can't call it a "great job" when the game literally doesn't work.

BB I've said this on forums quite a few times & honestly for a while, you seemed to take notice but please, rather than keeping everyone in the dark & ranting on here trying to find out what's gone wrong, just a little update on the homepage (rather than a one liner in the middle of this thread) would keep everyone a lot calmer :/ Fed up maybe, but a lot happier knowing you're investigating, know what the problem is, how long it's going to take etc. Is it really too much to ask for?

interesting part here is the 'no warning'. i mean up to the crash it was working perfectly. in the past when big updates have been released there has been lag growing gradually worse and then the servers give up. then bb spends about a week getting things back to normal.

Yes BB has a hard job to do and for the most part they do it well especially since they created this major update and they did not give up on a game like many other companies do. BUT it is unacceptable to have a server crash minutes after the biggest update in the TSO history and no feedback given at all on how long is going to take to fix it or what the problem is. This shows no respect towards the players. I bet you if there was some short of explanation other than "we are looking into it" in a forum post ppl would not rage without thinking...

I understand your rage, and I dont understand why the put it out today.
This thing has been happening on test server for many players on a daily- weekly monthly basis since they launched it on 1st of September. If you look at forum there you see that it was still an issue yesterday, so if you judge from the comment on test server forum, this thing is not ready to launch.
As we get 0 feedback on test, we dont know how many was affected. If it was 99% of 50%,- but judging from the number of reports, it was quite a lot.
From what I have seen on test - for me this was a disaster just waiting to happen.

Not sure I fully believe this response as there was minimal lag prior to the crash (minimal for TSO anyway) and the main thing overloaded servers would produce is increased response times (basically lag).

Nah usually they fix it internally, but you do have to sent support a message. It has happened twice to me and they are pretty quick about it too. Only took 4-5 hours:)

Well this is a shock.... NOT..... people shouldn't be complaining about this at all, infact it should have been predicted based on past performance, BB are yet to make any significant change to the game without some disaster resulting in further downtime and maintenance,

AND they decided to do this change a couple weeks out from the Halloween Event???? lol, I sense a few rough weeks ahead with multiple "additional maintenance"

Yep which is even more frustrating because server overload was the EASIEST thing to predict of happening, so it could have been prevented...

Thats a bit too simplistic representation of the truth

We are not sure just yet if indeed load is the issue or something else- but even if load was the issue, there is a difference between predicting and fixing where it goes wrong. Loadtests were run but are dependent on how many log on- If the real load is much higher that what was possible to test- other bugs might have popped up and odds are that someone at BB will have predicted it-

Still- if you can't test for it due to the logistics- you cant really prevent it when it pops up. One of the joys of going live and then finding a lot more people logging on across all servers across localizations and then murphy kicking you when you are down with an unexpeced gamebreaking bug :P

Kinda expected effect for this game (and a lot of other ones i know). All TSO players that have been around for a year for two should by now anticipate this effect- it happened every major upgrade of the game so far )

That is crazy, what can you buy with so much money....if your addicted to coca cola is cheaper :)

ps: not realy worried, they'll fix the game in 3-4h, that is ok .... i play h7 online, when their servers go down, it takes them 2-3 days to restart the game sometimes ... so the settlers team is preaty good ;)

This morning it surprised me the servers were up and accually worked fine,
So i was affraid for a moment that i was going to lose 5K.

I hope you understand why i'm telling you this,
With all of the bigger updates this game has ever done these kinda crashes occurred.
Thus it was no surprise to me it happened again..

Tho when even we know what is going to happen,
How can a company like BB fail to see this?

Be glad that the server crashed. That is the usual thing to do for the server after an update, so that shows that everything is in order. :)
It would make me very wary when there is no server crash because that would mean that some really mean bug had been implemented. ;)

2 years weve waited for an expansion and we finally have it and you are whinging about a couple of hours of downtime so BB can fix a game u can play for free lol

insanity at its best its like getting a free meal and complaining your water didnt have enough ice in it! lol

Twas the Day after Expansion and all through the land,
Not a general was stirring, awaiting server to go live planned.

Level 50's slept well, in assurance it seems,
That new content and levels were more than just dreams!

New buildings and chains to build on their land -

probably because there was nothing to fix other than unexpected players returning from a long time absent causing serious overload i guess. as ravel has already said 'there is nothing wrong with the version, it seems the sever is overloaded' well with the best intuition on the planet u cant know just how many players will return, again i say its been a BB success, settlers is popular again :) whooohoooooo

Nothing to fix ???? It has not been working as it should on the test server either. I was able to log on last Friday, then I had all in all 2 times 24 hours of server actually working since 1st of September, when it was launched on test. If you go to test sever forum you can see how many are still having server zone crashed in there.

For easter event was server overload, units they solve overload they make limit on zones. game was available, but not all players was able to log in.
This time is something else, BB said is overloaded, because they can't say: yes you have right when you say we don't ready for xxl versions

Perhaps they found it easier to solve this by backrolling whole server some hours instead of fixing thousands of individual crashed zones.. I don't know, but I guess time will tell..

Why you never listen to people who test all version on the testserver, and gives all reply with issues.
Why you implemented in the online-version, while the bugs on testserver not fixed ???

I figure 'Server Overload' is just a layman's phrase to appease the masses.

In real terms, to increase server functional capacity (to handle increased load) they could be looking at a number of factors, all of which should have already been done (namely: maximize threading and balance core affinity, maximize persistent database connections, improving server architecture (newer CPUs, more RAM etc))

As I stated earlier though, server overload would first show as lag, simply due to increased response times and yet there was no noticeable lag before the crash.
