View Full Version : Cant close info window so I can play game [16515]

Dear fox-ish Settlers,

With the latest Firefox version (49.01) many details changed "under the hood". This caused an invisible layer now to disappear when the game is started. As a result nothing can be done inside the game, although it's loaded properly.

http://static.cdn.ubi.com/0034/int/website/pictures/logo_firefox.png

Our developers are working on a fix. Since it's a website based issue, no game update is needed to apply the changes. We will update this post once the improvement is deployed.

How can you still play?

Please use our "Slim Browser (http://www.thesettlersonline.com/en/download-game)" to be able to play
Use Firefox portable (https://duckduckgo.com/?q=firefox+portable+48.0.2) version 48.0.2 or lower
Use another Browser like Chrome, Edge or Internet Explorer

Thank you for your patience!

EDIT: a hotfix has been deployed which should resolve this issue. Please report if this worked or not in this thread.

EDIT2: OK - so the hotfix will allow you to log in normally and get past the window, but multiple reports suggest that Firefox still suffers from a huge amount of lag since version 49.01 went live.

This is due to the "Protected Flash" option being automatically turned on by default with the new version. You'll need to follow this guide to turn it off (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/adobe-flash-protected-mode-firefox), and you'll notice the lag disappear.

IMPORTANT EDIT Today there was a Firefox update to Version 49.0.2 - please can you make sure you've downloaded this latest version. In its changelog there's a specific fix for these issues:

Asynchronous rendering of the Flash plugins is now enabled by default. This should improve performance and reduce crashes for sites that use the Flash plugin. (Bug 1307108)

You can download this new version here (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/).

I have the same problem. Restarting and clearing the cache does not work. The problem seems to be related to firefox atm.
I logged on after the servers went up, before the emergency patch, and it worked then.
After the emergency patch it stoped working.

I logged on on another computer and there I can log on with firefox. On that PC I have not loged on before the emergency patch this afternoon.

So do other browsers work fine then? And can you confirm that Firefox doesn't work on one PC, but does on another?

Can you not close the window via the Green Arrow or the Cross in the top right?

Just need to narrow this down :).

Ive tried chrome the game works alas it looks awful on chrome not half as sharp as on firefox theres also a black line running through the game area on chrome.....I need to research how the chrome viewer - which looks pretty basic - works. Whats happening in settlers when you run it on firefox is also impacting on every other open tab.

I have already done all that at least three times before I posted about this problem. After reading the other players post regarding firefox, I tried loading the game in chrome and was able to close the screen and start playing. So it appears the issue lies with the update and firefox.

Firefox is not frozen, I can switch tabs and surf on them but nothing happens when I click on anything on the tab running Settlers online.
I have tried to click on alla possible buttons areas that you are supposed to be able to click on but there is no reaction.
It just keeps on showing the Haloween window with tips.
On the same PC Chrome works fine still.

Alright guys we're looking into this issue with Firefox. Can everyone please give me the Operating System they're using, as well as the version number of their Firefox browser.

In the meantime, you should be able to play the game with another browser until we have this sorted out e.g. Chrome, Internet Explorer.

Thanks for your cooperation!

Was that a 32-bit OS or a 32-bit FireFox?

You can check Firefox's bit version by doing the following:

Open the “Control Panel”.
Click on “Programs”.
Enter “Programs and Features”.
Check the list of installed programs for “Mozilla Firefox”.
Check the information in the bracket.
x64 = 64bit version // x86 = 32bit version

Here's a new bout of workarounds for you to use to try and resolve the issue:

Change the Browser as it seems to only affect the 64-bit version of Firefox.
Check in your Firefox URL-Line if a blocknotification appears. Add the page to the trusted sites + refresh the page.
Deactivate ALL Addons or deinstall those.
Completly deinstall firefox and reinstall it.

Please try these and report back - thanks :)!

Please work with us to try and resolve this, and keep anything off-topic to their own separate threads.

Correction of my previous post that I had no problems with Firefox. Today (with no other system/software changes from yesterday) I could not get rid of the info window and could not play. Nothing could be clicked on (in fact a normal click target didn't even highlight) and I couldn't scroll the map. I could right-click and view page source, etc. so it wasn't that Firefox was locked up it was like it couldn't talk to Flash or something. Restarting the browser had no effect. I did not reboot.

Started Chrome and everything worked fine. So I have no idea what is going on with Firefox.

I'm not sure where the problem lies, but in order to help provide as much information as possible:

Using Windows 7 home premium,
Chrome version 54.0
Firefox version 49.0.1

I allow Chrome to take care of keeping Flash current (Flash reports version 23.0.0.185 which matches what Flash says is the most current)

A couple months before the Halloween update I started using Firefox at work because it's a little easier on the battery if I'm not by a power source - and I always use Chrome at home. I never had any problem with Chrome or Firefox.

After the Halloween update (not the first day, but starting this morning 09:00 NZ time) Firefox can't get past the info window to log in. Closing and restarting the browser did nothing. I have not tried any of the fix methods mentioned. Chrome continues to function normally.

Since I have made no updates of any kind (drivers, Windows update, etc). between Firefox working and then now not working I must assume it was something in the Halloween update.

Hope any of this helps....

BTW - Chrome updated from version 53 to 54 and now the text in the game is really small. I have to zoom to 110% to make them like they were. Be prepared for this if you run Chrome. I'm going to try to adapt to the new size because zoom can cause issues elsewhere, but my eyes aren't what they used to be...
(why oh why do people change things like this on users ?!?)

OK - so the hotfix will allow you to log in normally and get past the window, but multiple reports suggest that Firefox still suffers from a huge amount of lag since version 49.01 went live.

This is due to the "Protected Flash" option being automatically turned on by default with the new version. You'll need to follow this guide to turn it off (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/adobe-flash-protected-mode-firefox), and you'll notice the lag disappear.

OK - so the hotfix will allow you to log in normally and get past the window, but multiple reports suggest that Firefox still suffers from a huge amount of lag since version 49.01 went live.

I really doubt that problem is in firefox 49.0.1, I updated to this version on 26th september and problems with login started yesterday and lags occured after "hotfix"

Agree, I got version 49.0.1 23rd of September, long time ago this issue started. Now I can go into game but playing is not possible. It's like my CPU is on 100%, everything is so slow, delayed reaction. Turn off protected flash didn't help.

Today there was a Firefox update to Version 49.0.2 - please can you make sure you've downloaded this latest version.

Downloaded that, but what a pity that game won't allow me to log in with FF.

I did the update to ver 49.02 and now zooming in and out with the mouse wheel is unpredicted, it is not steady at all and made the game hard to plat. Even zooming in via the keyboard is useless.

It is a Firefox issue because the game plays ok in Opera and Chrome on Windows pc and Safari on an Imac.

I am surprised no-one else has posted this problem.

I cannot play with FireFox atm, currently using Chrome, but not my favorite browser.

Do not know if a solution has been found yet
