View Full Version : Database Maintenance tomorrow is it 14 hours ?!
Another event downtime today. Can we have 1 day extension to make up for it? Not bothered for myself but many will miss out logging in today and lose out on bonus and sending out explorers. Seems this happens every event sadly.
I know we getall these freebies but some players need them (thinking lower levels) and think extension is better than freebies in mail.
No mention of prem, adv time etc being extended either
Where you all reading there a downtime today?
If homepage then reread as it says games unaffected!
stop moaning and get on with playing

I was playing and the game froze, as it sometimes does during these events. Hit refresh only to find out I couldn't log in due to the network maintenance. Lost nearly 3 hours of premium time. Maybe an in game notification would've been nice.

Such ad-hoc service windows in a large server parc are unfortunate and often unavoidable. But simply posting a notice on the front page, and not giving a heads-up info box inside the game, is not good enough. BB can communicate better than what we saw today, that's for sure.
Kept hearing people saying there was a maintenance coming, but I saw nothing about it. Looked on the forums and no posts, no information. Seems it was only on the homepage with very little info on there. For someone who was already on it might have well been no notice whatsoever. Can't be that hard to send an in game mail, post on the forum and give some information to people as to what it was for, then the result.
BB have been historically awful at communication and things are no better. One reason why I said years ago I'd never buy gems again and nothing in the recent past has changed that position. Just such a simple thing, but BB just so, so lazy.

Dear Settlers,
A database maintenance is scheduled for tomorrow.
During this time the game will be unavailable.
http://static.cdn.ubi.com/0034/int/general/gameupdate_maintenance/2016_06/EN_maintenance.png
Day: Wednesday, October 26th
Worlds: All (1-3) closed
Start: Approx. 00:00 BST
End: Approx. 14:00 BST
Adventures & Premium: Times will be extended
This will fix a few issues, including those affecting the Provision House and its production queues.
Happy Settling!
BB_Saqui
As I see its start at the midnight and end at the 2 PM so I'm not sure is it really 14 hours? or a mistake?
Its really long, not sad to be honest, if it is a database then I really hope this will mean clean up and re-index things, and things make the game much faster, I really would like to see what the specific changes and fixes will be applied, its 14 hours !
Also, the cemeteries things, my buff will end tomorrow during maintenance and might even got exhausted !
I see this will include game update to fix PH bug, not only DB.
Hope event gets extented. we will lose 1 day of playing if you add those 2 maints together - and that's not our fault
stop moaning and get on with playing
All heart! LOL
yeeehaawwwwww ;-)
Come on mods, this impacts everyone's planning. Answer as soon as you can please.
It shouts out "typo!" but it might not be. It introduces uncertainty and that's not good.
On the ground it means you go offline an hour before my buffs run out and I'll lose 14 hours of strong production.
PS There's always somebody who'll say "Stop complaining, the devs do a tough job". In advance, please stop doing that. LOL. We know, we agree. We just need clarity :-)

BB confirmed that in global chat in our server :) yes it is 14 hours.

MODs only moderate chat. We have no input on when maintenance is held
Yes this maintenance is scheduled for a 14 hour duration. There's nothing that can be done, because this maintenance is to do with our database and is naturally time consuming. There's also two other tasks being completed during this window.
Premium and adventures will be extended.
I would presume that using good old common sense, Daz. But thanks. Please also confirm if you can cure my gout or not. I was going to a doctor otherwise :)
Thanks for the answer to the others. If it's necessary, c'est la vie. Not sure what I'll do on night shift though. Bereft!

...and sent before the downtime starts so those of us using rainbows can make sure our patches don't run out without having to stop production and waste buff time.

Is there really a 14 hr maintenance coming up 2moro? Jeez...
Is there really a 14 hr maintenance coming up 2moro? Jeez...
According to the front page here and usa indeed yes there is.
My personal thought if its not a misprint would be terrible communication from BB in my opinion during an event a 14 hours down time need 48 hrs notice not less then 8 hours notice.
I am starting to get very much annoyed at the endless stream of downtime, maintaince, bug fixes during this event. I think we lost MORE then a day playtime already for this 3week event....
The short notice was the worst thing with this. I've got stadium snacks finishing in the early hours. I'll have to stop them and waste their effect or leave important workyards run unbuffed until tomorrow evening. Poor show. But at least we know finally.
Wonder how many other games have as many down-times?

I had same problem so stopped and started them
I know on other server people have rainbows due to run out was the maintenance is active it is ridiculous the notice given
Not to mention the people from southern hemisphere might not even find out in time and then they could loose out big time to,

AS for the working out compo surly it wouldn't be enough to keep people happy anyways
There needs to be more notice given for things like this I couldn't even log in to this account yesterday for hours because the Uplay maintenance that was going on.
Seriously this not fair AND how come you seem to always need to do "extra maintenance's" when events are on
Rant over but it is ridiculous with the notice given
and we loose a few pumps ,who cares
and we loose a few pumps ,who cares
not about pumpkins its about other things what if they have weapons chain buffed or mines etc the whole down time not all about pumpkins but the game in general
im just shocked the lack of notice an no im not from OZ etc but i can see them being very angry though
We will also miss a collie respawn, which will make it just a little bit harder to do the collie achievement.
and we loose a few pumps ,who cares
The day no-one cares and the day no-one bothers to post their displeasure at losing game time is essentially the day that no-one opens their wallet to support the game. There follows -> End of game.
Basically, whether it makes for pleasant forum reading or no, BB need people to care and people caring means people posting opinions. Good and bad.
Needless to say I am horrified that a commercial company thinks it is ok to remove a paid for service for such an extended period of time and during an event and considers the lack of notice acceptable and the added inconvenience not even worthy of an apology!!!!!!!
Yes the inconvenience is infuriating.
Yes many people will have very expensive buffs running on very expensive production chains that will expire during this time and would normally have been rebuffed or put to sleep.
Yes many people will fail to reach there target goal of achievements or event items due to possibly losing a golem respawn opportunity and at least 1 (if not 2) collectibles respawn.
Even more worrying than all of the above though is:
Why BB think it wise to do such a lengthy unplanned database maintenance activity across all worlds globally without fully testing it first? Note: I am assuming its untested as otherwise they would have designed, developed and tested the database maintenance activity in a non production environment then scaled it out via a copy of the production or TSOTesting databases followed by undertaking significant assurance checks prior to contemplating implementing this. All of this activity should have provided the ability to provide a lot more than 12 hours notice.
What are the other 2 changes being implemented. Shouldnt we have a Change Log entry for changes being made?
I have to agree that I simply cannot understand the timing of a 14 hour update during an event. Is what is being fixed so crucial that it couldn't have been rolled in when the event was being phased out (which is less than 2 weeks)? I would like to know...
Will the event be extended so people have time to complete achievements?
Will an extra golem show up to make up for the one that will most likely be seriously delayed?
Will you replace my Werewolf howls cast by a premium player that will be of no use since I will have to stop the cemeteries soon?
Will you move my premium time so that instead of ending on a well timed Sunday it now ends Monday morning which wastes the 14 hours completely?
I forgot things...
What will happen to my daily login bonus?
What will happen to our guild quests?
Both of the above occur during the maintenance. Why this time frame? Normally the maintenance is done at a time that doesn't impact the daily 00:00 activity.
If this is to just fix the fact the provision houses rearrange a queue that has been reordered, I can't believe anyone thinks it wise to do this during an event which (like events in general) time is crucial.
It will of course mess up 24 hour buff timings, etc. which I take into account if I'm warned far enough ahead of time but it seems these surprise maintenance's can only be announced very close to them happening. You know that people do use 36 hours (or longer) buffs, right?

I'm one of the many players whose pumpkin buffs were placed before any announcement was made and whose buffs end well before the maintenance. I'm quite unhappy with the shoddy planning of this; the short notice is unacceptable.

1. Could be a major issue re golems as some let their early golems stay up for guild mates to get the 1st water achievement and were reliant on hitting all of the rest each morning. Not sure how that will now fit with the downtime.
2. Had sent all my explorers out, as I have done everyday, so they come back at about 00:30, really hope maintenance starts late or bye bye about 150 pumpkins as will miss a run.
We ought to get a day of Premium for this to be frank! They used to give it out like sugar to get you hooked, but the more I consider how much this will cost me, the more it requires some real compensation.
We ought to get a day of Premium for this to be frank!
I'd go along with that. It is effectively costing me most of a premium day considering I do like to sleep before I go to work Monday morning and the game should be up at 02:00 therefore my premium will expire in the wee hours of my Monday morning. Costs me the previous evening and most of the day, so extending the premium when I can't play doesn't do a lot for me.

I feel your pain. It took away my main play time too for one day.
Hi BB, I know maintenance is needed, and yes, it really does suck that we are losing game time during an event, but I am assuming this is an urgent update, and we must put on our big boy and girl panties and find something else to do (like, um... housework. For goodness sake, why would you do that to me? My dust bunny collection is getting quite impressive, and I am not sure I am ready to evict any of them. The alternative involves dislodging a deceptively innocent looking cat from the laundry pile it has claimed as it's bed, and this will undoubtedly result in loss of blood (mine), if not entire digits (still mine).
I am however just wondering if it is at all possible to get more notice of any routine shut downs? It is entirely possible that someone in this timezone (NZ) logged off on Tuesday evening, with no notice of the pending maintenance, and will now be unable to log back in (thanks to maintenance and real world commitments - you know, like getting a household up and functioning and working) until Thursday evening. Whilst this is a longer maintenance than normal, even the 4-6 hour ones have the same effect for us. There are ways to prepare ones island for these inconveniences, but you need notice in order to do so - probably three or four days given people use buffs of that length. Are we able to be given that much notice?

I missed any notice at all as i live in AU. The first i knew of it was waking this morning and logging in to a closed game.
So as i type my pumpkin fields are likely running empty, none of my explorers can be sent out, I have elite weapons and mines now running unbuffed, no collectible spawns, no daily login (so no weekly bonus) wasted prem time etc etc.
I do appreciate that things need fixing, and i like the fact that BB are doing something for those effected by game glitches at the moment
..... but a minimum of 24 hours notice would have been appreciated so all players regardless of time zone would have been informed.

Really could have used some notice in advance of this, logged in at my usual time to find game unavailable and an announcement timed after I finished last sessions whilst I was asleep.
Not just losing a day's play but by the time I can get in pumpkin fields will have exhausted, those with enough in them will be running unbuffed for at least 24hrs, and explorers will be sitting idle for same time, plus the timing means it's quite likely my login bonus will be reset back to Day 1.

Thanks for the advanced notice of a 14 hour downtime during an event. Are you going to extend the event because of the additional downtime ? How about giving us a decent amount of pumpkins that we will be missing out on?
What about the daily log in bonus ? We shouldn't loose that because of this
This maintenance should have been postponed until after the event.

I'm glad you don't feel affected, but look at it this way....
Let's say your hobby was gardening. You have spent several months/years taking care of the plants and arranging them and pruning them, etc. There is a special show going on where you can showcase your best flowers and perhaps win some awards. You needed to water them before the showing but but the utility company decided to replace all the water pipes and you won't have water for quite some period of time and they didn't warn you. So many of your plants suffer or die, and you have to replace a lot. I don't think you would say "eh - they are just flowers".
I could come up with a lot of analogies. I find this game more like a hobby and I've invested a lot of time making things as good as they could be, and now during events I make maximum use of my stores and troops and design - and time is taken away from me without proper warning or consideration.
I misread and thought it was just two hours, have to play my other settler games.
I'll look forward to continuing The Valiant Little Tailor Adventure when able to.
Happy pumpkin collecting everyone.
I'm 100% certain that the "database maintenance" excuse is a catch all style cop out. There's no way that any decent tech needs to take down a server for so long if they know what they're needing to do. I think there's a problem, they don't know what it is and can't tell without taking it offline. This would explain the urgency of it. being unable to wait until the event is over, but also the fact they've picked their quietest time is also telling.
Unfortunately for myself and any other Australian/New Zealand players this is prime playing time. If the downtime ends up as scheduled, it will last my time 9:30 am to 11:30pm. We'll get compensation, sure. But it'll be pathetic. Amazing given it costs BB nothing. Also, the communication will be, as always. woeful. BB have needed a customer service officer for years. People have quit the game or stopped paying money largely because of this sort of treatment and yet it keeps happening.

Is "Settlers Online" the only game that needs updates and maintenance every few days ?
1 gem pit each sounds about right ;)
Yes like 200 refillers :D we are more than day behind with all the downtime..Its called planning things.. but for some reason they do not plan.. i rather have the old weekly thing back than updates during events..
I really hope they include enough refills for 24h for all 9 fields into the small package as well. Why 24h? Because we have Aussies that basically can't play for a whole day (sleep you know). That means they lose 24hours of doi9ng adventures for refills. So would be pretty fair to have that added

CHANGES & IMPROVEMENTS
•Ongoing Provision House or Rarity Provision House productions are now canceled when a buff adventure is canceled or finished.
So I guess the lesson is: don't tinker with the game mechanics at the start of an event, this was not urgent, leave it for another game update.

So I guess the lesson is: don't tinker with the game mechanics at the start of an event, this was not urgent, leave it for another game update.
Thats not the only thing what devs will do.... atleast i hope it isint=)
I know there's a lot of sadness and frustration about the downtime, but I like to give companies like this the benefit of the doubt:
I doubt they just woke up today and said: You know, I think now is a fun time to do a database update.
More than likely an issue cropped up that necessitated a database update, and that failure to do so *now* would cause immediate problems (and therefore this could not be postponed). We would probably be a lot more annoyed if they choose to postpone till after the event and that resulted in data loss and we loose all our progress for 2 weeks :P
As for frustrations due to suddenness of downtime, and the length of the downtime. This is fair to be upset with and perhaps has more to do with the budget of BB than anything. If they had the budget of larger MMORPGs, they probably could afford to have multiple real time redundancies and parallel upgrades in place. They could have the correct staff & equipment in place to better forward-plan downtimes. But fair be fair, this *IS* a 'minor' game with a much more limited budget so things like this should be tolerated.
Now, if they make a habit of doing this every couple of months, then that would be cause for concern. But things like this are not that frequent.
On a final note about being able to complete achievements/etc. I am not sure, but I suspect that the time allowance given to complete the various tasks also take into consideration a couple days of downtime. I.e., they give us 21 days instead of 19 days so they can budget for 2 days downtime.
Worth noting, BB usually has a reputation of sending us goodies in mail to make up for the inconvenience. I wonder what they will send us this time? They may send us a noble patch?!

I do not think anyone really knows whether the fix(es) been applied today are critical or urgent but I would assume it could have been quite possible to wait 2 more weeks for the fix.
But, same as with many other things and decisions that I've seen in this game, it is amazing the lack of respect and consideration this company shows to their customers... as for the people 'approving' this action... no comment, just... wake up.

How are we supposed to kill all of the golems on our island? The event runs for 21 days and you need 20 days to kill the golems (18 hour respawn? We do have to sleep sometime BB) but with all the downtime we've lost 2-3 days already! Get it sorted! Either extend the event or drop the number of golems needed for the achievements.

Ok, so instead imagine you go to see a film. You don't own the film but you're paying for the use of it. Now halfway through they turn the projector for planned maintenance and tell you that it's ok, you can come back in 14 hours to see the rest of the film. Still loling?

Golems respawn every 16 hours and during the 21 days of the event Golem can repawn upto 31.5 times, so 1 day will not matter in regards to golems needed for achievemnts.
It would seem sensible that, emergencies excepted, the minimum notice time should be equal to the maximum buff time. Fortunately my rainbows will run to within 2 hours of the projected time the game will be restored, totally through luck rather than judgement. Kudos to BB however, started my prem early confident of the fact that downtime would occur to extend it to the end of the event, should be nearly there now.
Golems respawn every 16 hours and during the 21 days of the event Golem can repawn upto 31.5 times, so 1 day will not matter in regards to golems needed for achievemnts.
That assumes a player who's sleeping next to the keyboard. Try instead the player who only has a few hours each day to play. If this maintenance overlaps with the time (s)he could play, it's a day lost. The respawn time of 16 hours doesn't matter because the player won't be there in 16 hours. Instead of being able to do 21 Golems at best (and that's assuming someone who can play every day) it's now going to be 20. If even 1 other day is missed due to personal scheduling problems or perhaps another maintenance, it's 19 and 1 less achievement.
Personally I'm much more annoyed by the downtime we had a few days ago due to scheduled network stuff. If you're going to offer a paying web based service (and yes, some people pay for this game) the least you can do is make sure you have a fallback for those cases. You can't do without the database, but you can (temporarily) move to another datacenter with your service making any kind of maintenance to hardware not a valid excuse.
My rainbows also expire 2 hours after the planned downtime ends. I'm not feeling very confident tho, because this game has a history of downtimes being extended even multiple times.

Except that we don't play 24 hours a day! If you kill the golem when you first log in each day then, in all likelihood, it will be ready to kill again when you first log in the next day. In reality it still takes 1 day for each golem with a little wiggle room for what time you can log in but the idea of not sleeping for 3 weeks and getting 31 golems? Don't be ridiculous!

Im not daft thank you, I posted because your post was incorrect information.
I Was just explaining that missing 1 golem does not matter.
I too enjoy my sleep but with planning golem is not so bad to spawn, sure if your doing every day at the same time then you will only get 1 per day but then all your games the same and as per the time you can commit.
If you play 1 time a day you will get 1 collectible spawn so prob wont do the 200 pumpkin collectible achievements also.
So maybe BB will sit back and say yes any player who plays 30 mins to and hour a day cant complete this quest and therefore they may decide to do something in that respect.

Considering after loading the game often players only happen to find themselves back on the homepage after accidentally clicking on the PVP Rankings button next to Star Menu:
This short of a notice should at least have an in game mail or better yet a pop up with the info or both for good measure.
Said mail could also contain the compensation. Smooth things over much more nicely.

BB think the all players are level 10 and below or what !? I was calm, but now I'm so upset, but for real BB, I was really hope we get something better !
And for who lost their cemeteries, is 20 pumpkins is enough? he need 225 at least to restore them back.

Had the same happen earlier when I tried to login, refreshed page after ~20 mins and could login.
Thanks BB for the compensation I found in my inbox this morning. I still don't understand why the maintenance was so necessary in such a short time frame, but I just have to accept that it was. The compensation of the premium day and the werewolf howls was in my opinion a reasonable choice. Different players were affected in very different ways, and it would be near impossible to give each person something particular to their needs. A premium day covers the most options for players so I think it was a good choice.
As many people have said, any efforts to simply increase the notification time would be appreciated. And if at all possible, a regular email to the address of record for the account would help those that don't necessarily log in on a regular basis but still check their email.
I don't usually criticise when we get offered gifts after problem but this time I feel I must. I'm pretty sure we got 20 pumpkins (and some pumpkin buffs).I was unable yo send out my explorers before I went to bed thanks to the maintenance - I've got 14 of them - all would have been on long searches. That's 140 pumpkins I've lost. The pumpkin buffs won't cover that.
This is a merged thread.

This was not the first time BB failed to announce about ubi-maintenance. Probably not the last one either..
