View Full Version : Daylight savings time
Just wondering if someone messed up the time in Settlers world? I'm sure the update was due to start at 8am...
So here I am merrily playing...and up pops the server shut down message.
I ignore it, the message on the homepage could not be clearer, '8 BST'
Ok so there is word word 'approximately' Is 7 am aprox to 8 BST ????
So WHEN exactly is shut down today? The usual 7 - 11 seems likely. Can someone please change the homepage.

Yeah it was... but they messed that up...How hard is it to actually give the correct information.
yes they did - BB seem to have become confused by BST and started an hour earlier than their stated time
"Start: Approx. 08:00 BST
End: Approx. 12:00 BST"
The servers went down at around 7am BST!
mid way through a final attack on my YWC!
Had planned to do mornng maintenance of my isle before announced Game Update.
Apparently started 08:00 CEST instead of 8:00 AM BST :(

Yes 1h too soon:(
has bb ever heard of customer service? if ur not careful you'll be getting a reputation of just not caring about ur client base.
Oh Wait! just like the changes that need to be made on the homepage... it's too late!

Yes very grrrr!
If NASA can do it, so can BB!
"The Mars Climate Orbiter (formerly the Mars Surveyor '98 Orbiter) was a 338-kilogram (745 lb) robotic space probe launched by NASA on December 11, 1998 to study the Martian climate, Martian atmosphere, and surface changes and to act as the communications relay in the Mars Surveyor '98 program for Mars Polar Lander. However, on September 23, 1999, communication with the spacecraft was lost as the spacecraft went into orbital insertion, due to ground-based computer software which produced output in non-SI units of pound-force seconds (lbf·s) instead of the SI units of newton-seconds (N·s) specified in the contract between NASA and Lockheed. The spacecraft encountered Mars on a trajectory that brought it too close to the planet, causing it to pass through the upper atmosphere and disintegrate."

When it comes to the guild quests BB does not use summer time - but when it comes to maint they have summer time +1 hour it seems. The summer time always confuse me - but seems they started this at 7 GMT summer time,- that is 6 GMT real time.
Absolutely useless. Everything buffed and timed to allow me to do maintenance, final attack sent in 2nd thief and down it goes 56 minutes early. Could be time to concentrate on Civ VI from now on.

Strictly speaking BST can be either British Summer Time or British Standard Time. However, as BB seem unaware, in the DST period (now), they are the same thing. Hopeless.
Valuable production lines running unbuffed; Bookbinder and Barracks not producing as unable to order new stuff - still 30min until maintenance SHOULD have started
I got up for 6.3o am BST to check my game prior to shutdown for maintenance ,once again they have mislead us becoming a regular thing being lied to!!!!!

Or indeed they don't know the difference between GMT BST DST effects etc and were convinced they did
Still annoying as i too wanted to send off explorers, start geos etc before maintenance

Unbelievable, logged in early to send all my geos out for granite searches so my mines dont run out - frustrating

hmm - i hope BB wont send the TSO servers into orbit ...
Sorry, but how long have you all been playing this game? You know BB is unreliable on maintenance and yet you leave buffing your buildings until ten minutes before shutdown. Do your island the night before then sit back with a cup of tea and a good book.
best make it a substantial book as well )
On the other hand, many of us are now in orbit mood wise!
Icegirl, I dont appreciate being told off for what is BB's error, not mine! And the night before??? Many buffs, searches etc are geared towards when we can actually get on line and in the time we have, so yes, I and others gear ourselves to that. If we are given wrong/misleading information it isnt resolved by doing things 'the night before', Its resolved by BB getting its act together.

Good luck with that! I've been playing long enough not to trust them. Maybe one day you'll catch wise, until then please do not hold your breath.
I wonder if they will also start update 1 hour early on german servers ?
Checked french server - there it says 8- 12 - without time-zone - that would be 8 CEST - and that was when EU-servers closed.
Since servers are located in France I think someone wrongly put a 'BST' behind time in forum Post :(
A sarcastic comment would have been acceptable, Telling people off is most definitely the wrong tone of voice and approach. Yes we know BB has their fair share of BooBoo 's but it goes a bit far to then blame the player for their mistake.
The bottom line is, BeeBee made a BooBoo so any irritation and blame should be put there. The people that have been aorund the block by now also know that getting annoyed is pointless - so it is more managing expectations than anything else.
So i ddint manage to send of the explorers and rebuild some mines etc before maintenance- in the end it is a limited effect although buffs running out can be quite annoying - esp if you planned to switch off production in the morning (instead of 10+ hours earlier .....) Doodoo happens and hopefully it also means servers are back 1 hour earlier

In 1h earlyer happends maybe in dreams but not here lol
I'll settle for anything less than the 3 days the last one took.
Hello folks,
As you've rightly pointed out, there was a publishing mistake on our maintenance notice this morning. I usually alter the times to reflect the BST timezone as this is the UK server, but this time I was given the times with that alteration already made, which led to this error. I've now corrected the times. I apologise for any inconvenience caused and will do my best to ensure it doesn't happen again.

Thanks Saqui, i know it not your fault.... its your devs fault not giving the correct times (timezone).
it would be less confusing if BB stuck to GMT time all the time and forgot about using daylight savings time as every country switches on diff days and some dont switch at all. As far as i can see even some states in the USA dont use daylight savings and use the same time all year round.
Frankly i think daylight saving time should be stopped as its no longer needed and just confuses a lot of ppl.
they seem to think that the end time originally posted was the right one though :P

Best way to stop using daylight saving is to move clocks half an hour so it would not be too far from each and keep it there

Still 20 mins for 11 bst time the new maintainence ending time, the first time was 12bst

I totally aggree.
All times should be posted as GMT (UTC) as this is server time; then for players (and DEVs) to adapt to local time zones, Daylight Saving or not :)

Could be time to concentrate on Civ VI from now on.
You mean Civ IV right? Thats what all the cool olegits are playing..
And here we are again, unable to set things up before I go to work. I wonder if anyone can tell me when the last update actually went according to plan?

There was a planned network and database maintenance from 01:00 - 07:00 BST. Nothing related to the update and notice was provided on the homepage and other channels.
Sorry, maintenance not update, still not done by 7am tho was it?
I have seen this problem on many other MMORPGs.
imho, by far the best solution is to have a "Game Time".
Not a server time or a time based on the current time in the time zone of most of the players, no. A Game Time.
This time will be used ALWAYS and EVERYWHERE that a reference to the time is required.
a chat command can query this time and players will adjust their brains accordingly.
Anyway, credit where it's due.
Thank You Saqui for the advance notice of Monday's network and database maintenance.
For once we all have a chance to see it and plan accordingly instead of logging in to find it already happening.
