View Full Version : Banned Words
Us, the gentlemen were discussing about different trees. And when it came time to tell what trees I chopped down at spring. I could not say, because it is so uncertain what is bannable offence with this pegi-stuff.
90-99% of players are adults, please turn this into adult game already, like some (most?) versions of this game already are.
These unnecessary rules/limitations just are insult to us players and this community.

I can understand why some words are not allowed - and the ones I think of is not needed. But words that has a perfectly innocent meaning in some cases,- I dont get why they are on the list. I cant tell my guild members that I have been w e e d i n g my garden for instance - that is soo stupid. The intentions of the rules are maybe fine - but they way they are - just make them come out as something ridiculous.
Besides that I dont mind that there are kids playing the game, but would not like them to play unsupervised as 99% of players here are adults. I dont see that it is the banned words or any other words that is the tread to the kids if they play alone.
There are no words which will result in a ban, there are however words which the chat filter does not allow. It's only when you try and circumvent the filter do you risk a ban.
It does not matter if 99.9999999% of players are adult, what does matter is children are allowed so you are expected to act as if kids are present. The keyword here is the word adult, that is one who is expected to take responsibility for their words and actions. It's also the case that not everyone wants to see the language of gutter on screen.
Sure the system we have has flaws but as yet we have not perfected the technology to the level which would allow us to have a flaw free system.

The system is stupid and the way it works, makes people find it ridiculous.
When perfectly normal innocent words is filtered because people with too much imagination can find ways to use them that is not so innocent. Sensible rules are fine
No matter what words are banned or allowed - it does not change that it is the people need to behave - and parents need to supervise their kids. you can still somehow put the remaining words together to offend people - both so that they feel offended with good reason, and because they love to be offended.
No rules can prevent that.
Word that only have one not innocent meaning- fine by me to ban them. But please don't ban every word that might be used in an offending way.
If I had a kid playing this kid I would not be worried that he or she heard a conversation where one player told the other that he spend the Sunday w e e ding the garden:p I would be more worried about what went on in whisper no matter what words was used.
It's not easy to filter 'bad' words. I remember once investigating a bounced email because it contained the name of an English town (postcode DN15 6LZ for the curious).
I'd rather have the filter there than not though, as sometimes people forget they're speaking in public and the filter prevents embarrassment or offence on some occasions.
The only thing I can say is that in the Sons of the Little Tailor there is the "Golden Ass".

I dont chat in this game unless absolutely necessary cause of the ridiculous rules. The problem is that the rules are very unspecific. I dont know what is considered bad by native english speakers. If i knew what the forbidden words were Id be able to follow the rules but right now its impossible.
Worse, game officials flat out refuse to tell what words are allowed and what arent! Ive asked several times. Yet you get punished anyway whenever they feel like since you cant know what the rules are!!!

The Rules are available for all to see, they even have their own section of this forum dedicated to them:
Rules of Conduct (https://forum.thesettlersonline.com/forums/224-Rules-of-Conduct)
certain tree I mentioned at title, has been touched by censorship. Title has been changed. I rest my case. For now.

The rules themselves are not the problem, it's how they are implemented. I would say the legal team are to blame and that they should be demoted to recuits for their lack of due diligence.
What is and is not a offensive word is something which should be under constant review as language changes over time. The same can be said about the rule about not encouraging somebody to commit a illegal act, as new laws are added to the books and old laws are repealed all the time, since Mods are not expected to be legal experts in the multiple legal systems we have here how can they be expected to enforce that game rule.

As a moderator I expect you have excellent understanding of the English language. Yet you dont even comprehend my simple sentences. I have read the rules many times over. What good are they if I dont know what words are allowed for use and what are forbidden? Where is the list of forbidden words? Without this the rules are useless and any official can just abuse them however they like.
It's very tough to monitor/moderate language. One example often used is the proper name for a female dog. In the correct context it's appropriate, in others it is very much not.
I think all BB is asking is that we try to obey the intent of the rule and use language that we would use in even the most formal social situation and not what we might use down at the local pub. I would hope everyone has enough common sense to know what would be ok and what would not. And if you want to 'split hairs' over some words or are not sure, then simply choose another way of expressing it.

Unfortunately the idea of them publishing a list is self defeating. For BB to list the banned words they would be guilty of breaking their own rule by using them in a public forum. I did once manage to find a list of non-pegi7 words on a pegi info site but took an age to find and I didn't bookmark it. Was on some sort of annual report.

As language are ever changing and words that are absolutely innocent changed into having other meanings also that some might find not so innocent - I fear that this is all we will see in chat in the future. - So still - cut that list down to the words that are truly "bad" - and let us be allowed to w e e d our garden again :-D

a lot of kids use words adults wouldnt use lol. Its usualy the kids that turn innocent words into bad words.
If i used the words most kids use these days when i was a kid i would have a bar of soap put in my mouth.
Seems the younger generation cant even talk without every other word being a swear word. even my nephew when he was 5 was swearing his head off all the time. Thats due to films having so much swearing in them.

I understood your simple sentences fine, particularly the one you marked in bold, which was the one I was focussed on before. You claimed that players "can't know what the rules are" and I was countering your hyperbole with fact. What you actually mean is that there is a lack of specifics for one particular rule. A rule that many seem to be able to deal with just fine by using a certain amount of common sense.
As has already been pointed out, producing a list of inappropriate words is self-defeating, not only because Blue Byte publishing it would violate the Pegi-7 rating but also because of contextual issues as well as the fluid nature of language as meanings evolve over time.
Nevertheless, if you require some guidance on this, then I suggest you consult the Oxford English Dictionary, which has a practice of annotating vulgar words within its pages as a good indicator as to whether a word is allowed or not. Failing that, by using the '/w <username>' command in chat, it is actually possible to whisper yourself and you can check whether a particular word is filtered or not. Failing that, you could always try contacting Pegi. After all, it is my understanding that they decided the final rating for the game.
As for the final part of your post. If you have knowledge of specific instances of abuse, then you should be familiar enough with the rules to know that they should be reported in a support ticket. If not, then your comment is, at best, hypothetical and serves no purpose other than to unjustifiably call into the question the integrity of the folks like myself who volunteer their time to help maintain the game community.
You are all entitled to discuss this topic as you see fit, but only within the framework of the rules as they currently exist. It has already been necessary to moderate one post, and I would rather there not be any more, so please keep it clean moving forward.
Thank you.
This discution is a non-sense.
This filter is not working at all... just add space... or use l33t sp34k... or.. or ...
This filter is NOT working at all.
It's just a way for BB to say : "we respect the law"
