Who are we??

I have been playing TSO for nearly three years now and I still don't know who I am in regards to my island. At first I thought I was the king then I thought I was the Mayor. But I am not either. Also when we get certain quests to complete we are being told to 'get to work' by a settlers character that appears on the side of the quest.

I know that this must sound silly to ask but after all it is my island and I decide what goes on in it. Is there any written information that explains what role or job title we, the players have.
