View Full Version : Interim client on Linux
Hi,
I have been trying to get this interim client working on Linux but it does not work.
If I open the link in a Wine Firefox 64, it simply doesn't pop up the windows asking to open the link.
If I open the webpage in a Linux browser and configure xdg-open to support tsorc:// links, I can get it to run the wine'd adobe air executable but I keep getting a popup telling me open the game from a browser.
Are you seriously just going to cut me off? If I have to wait 3 months before i can play again, I simply will refuse to return.

I hope it is tomorrow then when goes live
Same problem here.
Who on earth made a plan to force players to use a client that only exists for one platform? You say that if you don't use the client for the game, you cannot log in after tomorrow. Are you guys planning to cut off all Linux and Mac users??

Mac support has been confirmed almost since day one and has been mentioned in several posts by BB.
For Linux they don't seem to do anything and they seem to expect the users to setup Wine or some other trick to play. From today:
Since Linux can also obtain normal ".exe" installation files (with a small adjustment), it should work with the appropriate transformation. A player has already written instructions for the test server, which you could also use for the live. Something "special" is currently not provided for Linux.

that's about the test server interim client though, not the live instance.

BB is just saying that they are not currently doing anything for Linux and people can use the guide that some user made (https://forum.diesiedleronline.de/threads/141967-Den-herunterladbaren-Client-unter-Linux-zum-Laufen-bringen) when he tried the test server. There were other post by them too where they say that only Mac and Windows are officially supported at this point.
BTW the new version is already at the French server and there are no separate Linux version. Mac version is coming tomorrow.
looking at the french forums which are not usually that active there is now 17 pages of ppl who cant log in there is no mac installer from what i read also ppl on windows 7 ,8 and windows 10 32 bit all seem to not able to log in so nowt changed from the server version ..god helps most tomorrow if thats the case

Thanks for the link. Again it seems that players need to consult the German forums to get official answers.
I spent a few hours on the guide last night (big kudos to that player for writing it btw!) and still no running game. But it is nice to hear that it worked for someone. BB should really try to make an official and supported guide out of it.
This is really disappointing,
new download client is just few weeks out, without testing at all and now forced to main game.
last time, when I decided to make a break for a months, because of hard utilization at work, I returned almost after a 5 years ... I just forgot I did play :-D
Maybe it will be same now.
I will give a shot and try to make client working on my wine, but if it does not work, I think I will see you in few years again ... if ever again
I have gotten some success with wine.
Download the game and install it under wine.
Open the game page in developpers tool, open the console and use the gear icon to set "preserve log". Press the play button and it will post the link it tries to open.
Now run the game with:
/usr/bin/wine "C:\users\<your username here>\Local Settings\Application Data\Ubisoft\The Settlers Online\The Settlers Online.exe" "<insert link from console here>"
This will start the game but it still crashes after I click the green checkbox on the starting dialog... backtrace attached.
No linux client...no Joy...
I can't play...(I didn't try wine)...but I expected that TSO wil work..this is sad day for me...
I got it working on Linux using VirtualBox. Not the best solution, but at least it works. :)
Download "MSEdge on Win 10" from https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/tools/vms/
This is a free 90 days trial of Win 10 preinstalled as a virtual machine image.
Import it to VirtualBox, start it, and then open the webbrowser, log in and install the game client.
There are several different virtual machine images here also, which I have not tried. Should also be possible to use this solution on Mac.

this worked for me as well. posted a (looooong) description how to do it.
As I wrote in another thread, another solution (but that cost a bit of money) is to use a VM in the cloud.
Got it working after 5 minutes on amazon lightsail, pretty easy to do.
I took the 2g windows 2019 vm, it was running smooth enough.
For all those who are in same situation as I, running non-Windows SO I cann asure you that our leaving will make technical staff more happy. Sorry to find out that Ubi is Microsoft client.
BB really sucks for not creating it for linux... too bad... they will lose a lot of players and learn his own lesson

Not really some will be forced because there system cant work but most could play still if they put the effort in I know if i couldnt play and i loved the game i play i would do what ever i personally could to try and play and only failing that resign myself to not playing for a while..most of the complaints are from ppl to idle to even try

I'm also surviving on this solution
it is not optimal, it is pain and I pray for some linux unity client/browser plutin, but at least, I was able to play and gain something form winter event.
PS: what I did - KVM/QEMU howto:
1 ) download windows ova from link above
2 ) untar ova
3 ) convert vmdk to kvm/qemu format # qemu-img convert -f vmdk -O qcow .....
4 ) run image, download settlers client, play game ...
