The new downloadable client was launched yesterday on the French server. Maybe this thread from there will help any who hit similar problems as they reported:

I am dubious as to whether or not the client will open on my PC.

Reading the instructions etc,. suggests that the client must be downloaded without administrator rights as otherwise it will not open.

As a sole user of my PC I naturally hold administrator rights.

Does this mean that must somehow open a non administrator account on my pc in order to use this software?

Looks as if I may not be able to play for a while.

No, just when the program start don't add administration rights to it.

I am sole user it works fine already tested it on french server

You can't open the application The Settlers Online Installer.exe because Microsoft Windows applications are not supported on macOS
Is there only one version and all Mac users are stuffed?

well, ive downloaded the new client,i think, pressed blue play button, get a message "an erroe occurred and game is not available at the moment". i presume things are still going on with maintenance atm

I have a Mac at home, so I think my settlers gaming may be over.

its not finished yet the exact same thing happened yesterday on the french server when you try to start you will get a error as they havent finished installing the update yet and there was no mac installer yesterday on the french server

I just checked on Mac. It is still downloading .exe file no .dmg. May be i should wait more......

It just means when you install it, do not use the Right Click context menu option "Run as Administrator" just use the normal Open command or double click it.

Just one question, does this mean you cannot change the installation directory? Or does it mean you shouldn't change anything in the directory after it's installed? Because the client wanted to install itself in the user directory, and I tend to install everything in gamefolders and applicationfolders.


2. do not change the folder that is noted in the installation directory. If it is "only" installed, it works. If it is changed, it may not work.

I cant read French - not sure what is going on now - it is unclear if the process is done or not. I have installed the client - but have to search my files to find anything installed - so have no clue how they plan us to launch the game,- of if it is even possible yet.

Like you, I always install programs where I want to ie on other drives so as not to fill the C drive, but yes I read that also.

They are just saying they cannot guarantee it will work if you install somewhere else.

MAC and LINUX users are not allowed to login any more
also include users of 32bit versions of Windows and older versions of Windows (win7 ..etc)

I would say maybe even half of users will be unable to login after update

Yeah I only read that after I installed, I'm just so used to being able to change directories....but when I tried to reinstall it picked the directory I chose afterwards, so I'm not sure which directory to pick now. Anyways since they're still doing the maintenance I'll check later, that's why so many people cannot login yet Rejik :)

deinstall first then download file again and install from that, it might reset to standard install directory.

Danus1986 - I'm talking about tries performed on the test servers in last two weeks, not right now.

Trully said I heard, that on Linux, one french guys made it working on windows emulator - but I found other posts, where no one else were able to replicate it.

I do not know, if there are some windows emulator on MAC :-D

I too would like everything in English - when i asked for this before i was told just to follow the arrows! I would never make changes or install anything without being able to read everything first so that I could make informed decisions on whether to download

The download instructions we lazily made on a German account and not translated. It is exactly the same on the French server

This may help some, made by a player on the French server and shared, but is in French

Also, reading the French inputs, do not change the location set by BB for the file to be saved to as that messed it up for many over there.

There is a solution to using Win 7 in the French thread by some clever player.

As long as the client's window appears in the taskbar at the bottom, and it's marked "not responding" it's fine. Sometimes you have to wait 5 to 10 minutes for the game to start. And above all, do not touch anything!

My client is getting stuck. I am already waiting for 10 minutes and the process is not responding.

Even so, how can we play it on Linux ? Does the app work in WINE ?
I have friend that run the game on linux... and now they can't do it anymore as there is no client for Linux.

So if you run on MAC then basically Christmas event is cancelled and you can't even use your old browser to login - think it will be the end of the game for me. Quite frustrating after all the time spent going up the levels.

problems with the client installer integrity check .
Windows 10 microsoft edge web browser.
shutdown machine and restarted same affect.
deleted all prior files and restarted machine and then new download again - still same message.

moving to a laptop to test.

No display on Excelsior though I got the goods which is the main thing.
No go with Chrome. I got in OK straight away using Edge which was all I could get to work with the test version.
So far so good BUT the display is very coarse as if I was back 10 or 15 years ago. I can improve the workshops etc with zooming in but Chat, the Quest book & the friends list across the bottom are ugly & a bit hard on my eyes because they are out of proportion to the island & blurry. Is there anything I can do?
When I tried to go to the Forum directly from the game it took me to Firefox, my default browser, which of course said I wasn't logged on.
AND when am I going to get the goodies other players got for switching to a Ubisoft login - that is wh
These are niggles, not disasters.
BB deserves some praise though no doubt won't get it !!!!!!!! from the misery guts who do most of the posting.

Guild mate got a message from BB and looks like no settlers for Mac users till January! NOTE2: MacOS: We'd like to make further optimisations and polish to the Mac Client, we're aiming to launch it in early January. Currently, only the Windows client is available. We sincerely apologize for the delay.'

Well, I got the client launching. But, after the loading screen it freezes on the blue screen with the tips window. Doesn't look like it's working properly.
Windows 10 64 bit latest Windows release, using Chrome.

Edit: nevermind, after about 3-4 minutes waiting on the frozen screen it loaded. Guess it had to download all the assets or something.

Can you specify the slow bit? I waited about 10-15 minutes before closing it because it wasn't responding. Should I wait longer?

WTF!, you guys had years to do this, and yet, you failed to deliver… where is the Mac version?????? maybe in january? that's the christmas event gone at the very least.
you idiots… i guess this is it for me.
it was a blast playing, yes, with some highs and lows, the lows being everything bb f**** up during all the years of the game, culminating in this massive fail, which is alienating a lot of players because of incompetence, and the highs being all the fun i had playing a simples yet entertaining game.

So apparently, even if you have Windows 10, if you're using 32-bit you can't run the new client. Which is now the only way to log in. Excellent work!

now it's not a browser game anymore if you need to install that program that only works in (some) Windows.

You are probably missing some recommended or optional Windows updates like VC++ redist packages

Same thoughts. They could have left dual login - both browser and client - for as long as browser works, so anyone can chose.

For me, doesn't work on win7 64bit firefox, win10 64bit edge or win10 64bit firefox. Always hit the "Cannot update" error message. So that's me out until that is fixed...

Find the TSO client icon on your taskbar, right click, and right click again on client.exe
Select properties (see image 1)

In Compatibility -> Change high DPI settings, set "High DPI scaling override, Scaling performed by: Application" (see image 2)

Close the client and restart it.

I can't get the new client to do anything at all. I get error messages when I run the installer and although I get a message saying that it has installed correctly, when I click play I get absolutely nothing. So I have let my guild down by missing the GQ, missed my log in bonus and can see no way that I'm going to be able to play this game agai until BB put the old login back in place preferably before the new event starts on Monday.
I am using Win 7 64 bit and Firefox. Come on BB!

It can take several minutes to load the game on the first run, depending on your connection speed, as it has to load all the game assets. I would give it 20 minutes before declaring failure.

I downloaded the program and did what was told in the instructions. Once the game is loading you need patience. It took 10 minutes or so to download my island and from time to time i got the message "program does not respond"... but eventually i could start the game. (i hope the next time, loading times will be shorter, however....)

So : if you dont get errors while downloading/installing, be patient.

Let's see how playable the new client is.

i play 4 games over 14 tabs with just 4gb and a quad q8300. no issues here

It's certainly not slower (quite the opposite in fact), and although I do have 8GB it's "only" using around 848MB. I'm actually working at the moment so have Chrome open with multiple tabs (over 500MB of memory used by itself) plus various apps including Zoom.

I did find it much faster after I closed it down from first install, others have mentioned this also.

Edit: Excelsior does work but doesn't show the animation.

i am running windows 10, 64 bit,and i have been trying for hours but still the same pop up message update client,i cant believe they have not posted up anything about it,

Yeah this is the biggest problem that seems to be killing most people, and without any obvious answer (e.g. platform or OS compatibility issues). Obviously BB must know the reason why this message appears and they should be giving us some sort of guidance (like overloaded servers - try again later?)

What the hell has BB done? they could have migrated TSO to HTML5 and the player wouldn't have noticed any different whatever the platform. But no they have used a windows only based client - with no help for anyone who does not use Microsoft Windows. What a cluster buck!

The issue seems not to be the era of windows being used but whether it is 32bit or 64bit. Got a guild member online using windows 7 64 bit and another using windows 8 64 bit. Also got 2 guild members who cannot get online as they are on windows 10 32bit. Seems the client is insisting on 64.

Several mac users have managed to get online now by using the 14 day trial of Parallels. Could then look at the 30 day trial of VMware, or use Boot Camp?

64bit might fix some issues but I've tried on win7pro and win10, both 64bit, with a variety of browsers, and get stuck on "cannot update" every single time.. Be good to get a definitive response from BB though...

Legacy works. Client is different issue/step then login. You log into the TSO server with whatever login you have available. Next step, play (load) the game, is where the problem is.

Trying wine (windows emulator for Linux). Have installed the player ok but crashes as soon as it starts - most likely a compatibility issue. Tried to help someone on windows 10 x64to get theirs going, I wasn't holding my breath - the usual Unable to update client issue.

Mac = Partial success by using a windows emulator - officially mac not supported until the end of January.
Linux = Wine, allows logon and can install the game launcher - crashes
Windows = Update error seems to be a common outcome

Come on BB. What a complete mess, act responsibly and roll back to the Flash version until you have properly run tests

More or less, my antivirus notified me that there was no certificate for the web address but marked .exe file as safe

Just one question, does this mean you cannot change the installation directory? Or does it mean you shouldn't change anything in the directory after it's installed? Because the client wanted to install itself in the user directory, and I tend to install everything in gamefolders and applicationfolders.

PS: second time around the client can't install at the default location any more as it can't get "write access" for it... installs well at other locations, just doesn't work

come on bb where are you? you really need to respond to so many unhappy customers. i was hoping to get a couple of weeks of christmas event before this happened. it looks now that until you bring in unity you will have a lot less players and maybe by that time you will have lost them for good. i would suggest that once unity goes live that you send out emails to customers who were current before this implementation to see if you can recoup some of your losses. i don't know why i am surprised by the lack of information in this case but this is preventing so many of us from playing our beloved game rather than just some bugs preventing parts from working properly

Still nothing, downloading is ok, installing looks to be ok also, but when trying to start it says i need to contact the software distributer for a compatible version.....
Using windows 10 32 bit (i think).

play this game for 8 years now, every morning with a cup off coffee.
Will miss x-mass event this way.

AS a Steam user you can't follow the guides they gave earlier as we don't have proper credentials. Need to contact Steam support and ask them to unlink account and we should get a process siialr to FB accs. The problem is several have asked support since yesterdya and none as I seen have gotten replies back or reported uscessfully gotten in as a (former) Steam palyer. Who thought this was a good idea to do on a weekend???

I got it working on Linux using VirtualBox. Not the best solution, but at least it works. :)

Download "MSEdge on Win 10" from https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/tools/vms/

This is a free 90 days trial of Win 10 preinstalled as a virtual machine image.

Import it to VirtualBox, start it, and then open the webbrowser, log in and install the game client.

There are several different virtual machine images here also, which I have not tried. Should also be possible to use this solution on Mac.

Managed to load the software yesterday on two computers and game worked OK. Today the launcher freezes on both Computers . What a useless bunch - launching software without a thorough check out first. Tempted to remove the software and reload it but there have been several reports of this action wiping a lot more than just the launcher.

H,m Tried to reinstall the download - this uninstalls the software then re-installs. Managed to log in after a couple of borked attempts. Seems to have solved the problem for now.

When using the new client it often take more then a minute before I get to the game itself. Looks like the client freezes "not responding"-message, on the tips screen. Text is not blinking any longer. After waiting more then a minute the client works and game is loaded. W64-bit, Firefox. Waiting is key.

Win7 works without an issue for me. From what I read it needs to be 64 bit version? Give more details of the problems you experience so guys here can help you. Check if your Win7 is 32 or 64 bit version.

EDIT: Went to check if mine is 64 bit, and it is.

Not working on Win 7 Pro 64 bit and Firefox last version. Already trying for two days...

I downloaded and installed the file. I succeeded to login but everytime when I press "Play" it just reloads the page and nothing else.
The fix that hades8840 offered does not work for me - creating the folder "Client" and recording his "client.swf" file.

Restarting, reinstalling, recopying the "client.swf" file, starting directly the "client.exe"- nothing works... The good news is that I can buy gems... (oh, somebody already noticed this)

I mentioned that in the description the name of the file that we have to download is "The Settlers Online Installer RC1.exe" but indeed the downloaded file is without this RC1. Does this matter?

No the cheapest way to play, but I just tried an amazon lightsail instance, and it run well on a win2019 2g ram version. I took a lightsail because it's pretty easy to log in from the browser, but you could do it on ec2/azure/google with a vm you shut down after you play to save costs.

I'm no tech guy from Ubisoft. I just compared two installations, one that worked, one that didn't workand saw the two files were in diffrent folders.Just I gambled and toyed with permissions on folders and files and copied the two files in the Client folder. After a few days of trying to get this working on both pc's.
And yes I'm not expecting everybody wants to do this. And updates should run without this kind of problems.
I hope we don't get anymore nasty surprises in the next days.

Dont know about others, but some said legacy login work, well, didnt, was allways refreshing first page, this is first time since the update when I`m able just to log in, not even got the opportunity to test the downloadable client, and thats after what?? 2 days of trying on 4 different PCs with different OSes (W7 and W10 64bit). Front page with legacy login just kept coming back with log in and accept cookies again and again. Can imagine, plenty gave up before me. I did get in only after loading the page from FB settlers account by some miracle. So if you dont see some of your friends, expect they cannot log in, thus not even post into the forum. NO chance to even get to the step where they can try download and install client. Jeez.

For those that are stuck on LogIn reload with legacy. On front page, click on HELP/Support, then where to contact us, then Ways to get in touch with us, click on facebook, even you dont have FB account, click Play Game button there, then try to login with legacy again. Tested now on 2 of 4 machines I was not able to login from before, both work for now. Even managed client install on first go.

It had issues on test but they still went ahead on the French server and before they loaded it to all the other worlds there was page after page of complaints on the French server.

They launch it worldwide on a Friday shortly before Christmas and then go home. Many of the staff will now doubtless be on Christmas vacation time so this mess will just roll along until the players who cannot get in give up anf those who are in forget the ones who are/were stuck.

As a company BlueByte, and by default Ubisoft have done absolutely nothing to prove to people that it is worth investing in any of their games.

PS I hope that BB_Traffer will take the time to go through all of the issues raised on the various threads relating to this catastrophe, suggesting solutions.

In the past staff have always been around to solve problems closer to Christmas. My guess is thye're working on this now. With the Christmas event due tomorrow there's no way they'll have clocked off for Christmas yet (and it'll either be delayed or extended)

"Simple" if you are used to work with these things. Backup all your stuff, format disk, install new 64-bit system. You need to have 64-bit CPU. I think you cannot go from 32 to 64 other then clean install. Somebody will correct me if I am wrong.

Correct, you need to do a clean install of a new Win10, though can use same license you already had, if I understood the instruction correctly.

I'm not very good with this technical stuff, but i miss playing the game.

My main problem seems to be that there is no map called client when i dowload.
when i try to open the game it says: this app can not be exicuted on your pc, ask if there is a suitable softwere for your system.
win 10, 32 bit.

Any tips or tricks are welcome

I never saw Hades post but whoever came up with the fix should be put in charge of Ubisofts tech team :D The swf is erased every time I try the download. But I put the download file into the folder as directed and after a few false starts the game started.... So they need to look at which files are being copied successfully.

Unless they revert the „client”, Windows users that can't log in now will probably have to wait along with Mac users till next year for the new client,
as for the rest (my linux box included), they can dream of getting any compensation when Unity version goes live, assuming it actually exists, is going to go live, and work…
For everyone who played the Flash version…

So far there's only a bunch of standard „download the client”, „contact support” replies on FB :-/

If I remember right, production stops after 24 or 48 hours without login, so deposits might wait for you, there's a chance that even some of your buffs will still be on, you just won't accumulate anything during that time;-)

As durin says first have to move account. I have now posted a guide of what I had to do in Discussion tab for TSO on Steam. Check that.

Follow the instructions in the trouble shooting guide (https://forum.thesettlersonline.com/threads/38014-LIVESERVER-New-downloadable-client?p=361209#post361209) - specifically on manually creating the Client folder and copying the client.swf file. Thats what worked for me to fix the "can't update" issue

In short: Don't.

The client loads very slowly and several times windows may say it's not responding. This is normal. Do not close or stop it. Let it load to finish. It hasn't much to do with your computer, it's just slow. I got a powerful gaming computer and it takes 10 minutes to load up sometimes.
Do not touch the client, resize it or anything before it loads. Just let i load up undisturbed.

come back with more info what OS you using what is happening when you install is the folder in the right place with the right contents helps to take screen shots as ppl are finding hard to view others via their crystal balls

have you tested with edge chromium browser on windows 10 x64
it almost always work with new stuff
and maby an sfc /scannow in elevated cmd to see if system is corrupt

I read it and followed all steps several times. And surprise...

... it still NOT working on my PC - Win 7 Pro 64 bit and Firefox 84.0.1 64 bit... with all recommended shits installed...

It starts to load the client but after several seconds it says "connection issue..."

No antivirus or firewall is blocking it. The internet connection is good and stable...

I can start the client only from my company PC in the office which is equipped with same Windows and browser. So it works on some systems and it does not work on others.
I posted several times and nobody can answer. Or nobody cares...

it sounds like it is a local issue.

try a different browser. or even, try and go on test server and see if that one works to start.
also try any browser in safe mode/incognito (also as suggested)

So please do enlighten us all - WHEN will the 32-bit client, and MAC client and Linux client all arrive? "Early" January seems to have come and gone already.

We want the rest of our guild back, and that all relies on whatever BB are currently doing to address their Win 64-bit ONLY oversight!

Perhaps you can also enlighten us on how the players who are currently locked out of the game will have their paid active premium time, active PFB time, collapsed industrial mines, and missed "free" event booty all addressed too please?

Please share what's going on and stop leaving us in the dark!

Hi,

I am fighting with this installation since December. Yesterday I tried to install everything on clear PC. Now the client requires Adobe Air - Why?
I downloaded the new client.swf and recorded it and client.exe files in Client directory - no success.
I am on Win 7 Pro 64 bit with Firefox 84.0.2 64 bit with all required updates and shits installed... I tried with Chrome but the results is the same.
Before reinstalling the problem was "Connection issue".

Several times I posted about the problems I am facing but nobody answers. It seems that the moderators/support guys/whoever is responsible do not care.
I am wondering how many players have given up the game...

I am tired of fighting...

a) Is the 'update issue' you mention the problem you get when starting the game when a white window pops up telling us 'Cannot Update Client' ?
b) From the file size of what is linked that looks like the same install package we previously used. This package first ran an uninstall and then a new install. In view of your final comment is there something else that we should be uninstalling ?
c) I assume that we should make sure we do not have the old client open when we try to run the new package.

I actually found the opposite, It never downloaded the client.swf on the older versions , but just tried the newest today and then saw the animation as it downloads the correct client.swf into the client folder and then runs.

Client has the usual issues of flash from past - growing lag when playing more adventures in a row. In browser it was fixed by refresh. Sometimes I had to refresh after every finished adventure to get rid of lag. Now with crappy reload of client it is twice as bad. Drives me mad when I need to do things fast and dont want to hang around the game all day. ´But at least I can play, unlike Mackers.

Both the original client and now the new have way to many issues and they appear within only a couple of logins. I truly hope that this doesnt happen with the Unity one.

this morning every time i tried to visit another players island , tried 3 different players.
cleared cache and its working again, looks like solution to problems is back to clearing cache before you play each day resulting in all files needing downloaded again.
