View Full Version : Playing on mac

So I won't be able to play until you guys come up with a mac-supported version of the game? Why didn't you tell us that before? All this time and effort for a game I might not be able to continue playing. If you made it work for Microsoft, you should have been able to do the same for Mac. So disappointing and frustrating.

They've had all this time, why ruin it for mac users? My whole progress will be gone, not to mention I'll miss the event. Not sure what to expect of this game anymore.

NOTE2: MacOS: We'd like to make further optimisations and polish to the Mac Client, we're aiming to launch it in early January. Currently, only the Windows client is available. We sincerely apologize for the delay.

that means no game for 2-3 weeks for Mac users, just when event starts. What if someone just bought gems to buy something during event ? I agree with jonahs_c that's not the way they should communicate with us.

jonahs_c
18.12.20, 15:47
There was no proper communication about it and, to be honest, no proper effort. They waited to find out the mac version isn't ready on the day we switch to the new client? There isn't even an exact date of when this will get solved. We all know this is a maintenance game, and the fact that there's an event soon, just kills the whole game for me.

People asked for a Mac versions weeks ago when the new client hit test server and it was only for Windows so they had time but now it seems they did not properly test it and leave for the holidays

I don't see why, as a MAC user, I should set up a Windows virtual machine, the effort to make it work on all platforms should have been made. Not sure if this was their aim but I really am not sure if I can be bothered to play anymore - maybe it is about time I found a similar game that is supported.

I have to say, as a Mac user, this update has taken me completely by surprise. It now seems all Mac users will have to wait until January 2021 before a Mac client is released, and this is not even guaranteed. We will also now miss out on this Christmas Settlers festivities. Deeply disappointed in the support teams here, do they not realise that there are a lot of Mac users that like to play this game. Please provide your support and complain if you are also a Mac user that plays Settlers online. Thanks.

That won't get you through the event, even if you wait until the 21st to start it. Additionally, it's optimised to work with popular Windows apps like the Office suite and doesn't offer compatibility with less well supported apps. As the downloadable client doesn't even work on many Windows installs, I'm not confident that Parallels will handle it.

There should be some free alternatives to Parallels (virtualbox?), you can also run windows 10 without a license for quite a long time (with restrictions, but those don't matter if you only plan to use it for settlers online).

Adobe air is meant to be cross platform, the windows exe file is just the way the files have been packaged together, it should be really easy for a mac/linux client to be packaged in the same way.

borrowed from the german servers may help some may not credit to virusette

For all Mac users - as for Linux users - there is the possibility of setting up a VM and running Windows 10 in it to play with the client.

A bit of reading work is feasible.

What is a VM https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtuelle_Maschine

Here there is Virtualbox as a host system: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads In
addition the manufacturer's instructions: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/ End-user_documentation
Here is a German Tut that seems useful to me: https://www.elefacts.de/test-131-win...und_optimieren
Here are finished images with Win10: https://developer.microsoft.com/en- u ... tual-machines / Selects Windows 10 64 bit.
Windows is free for 90 days. Make a backup of the image before activation, then you can simply import the backup into the VM after 90 days. If you miss that, you'll have to set up a new VM in 90 days.

Which MACs are suitable ?: All with an Intel CPU, OS-X 10.9 or newer, at least 2 cores + 2 hyperthreads, 8 GB RAM and 50 GB of space on the disk. You have to try everything that is less. As far as I know, the completely new MACs with the new M1 processor are still out there, no VMs for x64 Windows are available. And real computers, not Apple TV.

Why Virtual Box? In my experience it is the handiest VM and probably the easiest for beginners.

a few tips on the side:

- Give the VM two cores, 4GB RAM and around 40GB disk space. 1 core and 2GB RAM are also sufficient, but then you only have slow motion.
- use it in fullscreen and remember the shortcut to get out of the VM without having to shut down Windows completely.
- Deactivates everything in Windows that has to do with services and updates (according to the motto: The answer is no). Install a browser of your choice in the VM and then use it for DSO.
- do not install virus scanners and only use them for DSO. I'm not doing this now, but it usually doesn't go really well.

And now in principle: You want to gamble, BB does not yet deliver a MAC client, so move your buttocks. You can cry and moan in other threads.
And google is very helpful with questions.

The problem is that it does not work on Win7 Pro 64bit FOR YOU. It works for many others. Have you tried all the thigns BB posted in a sticky thread somewhere, think News section.
There's is some kind of issue related to what other files are available on your computer, eg Visual Basic runtime dlls and what folders it ends up with. The game assumes you ahve all requiste auxillary files, like eg a brand new 10 install would have.
It's the same kind of deal as on Stema when install games it often adds some obscure Visual Basic stuff at first run automatically. Unfortunatley in this case we don't have an automated process to do this for us.

As you may have read here (https://forum.thesettlersonline.com/threads/38014-LIVESERVER-New-downloadable-client?p=361209&viewfull=1#post361209), support for 32-bit operating system and macOS will be available in January 2021.

I know many of you are disappointed (yes, I also know other words to put here) with this situation and I fully understand it. We're working hard to roll out this update as soon as possible so you can play on macOS or 32-bit system again until our Unity version is available. Once we complete the transition you will be able to play again from your web browser.

Your feedback is regularly sent to the development team.

Seeing we are now at mid January, is there any sort of update as to where the MacOS release is up to? I don't want to think it, but I feel that on the current schedule, the Easter event will launch before Mac users receive any attention. Even a simple "We're making progress, and are yet to have a release date, but are making progress" is better than no communication at all. I appreciate you've been responding where you can Traff, and understand you're only able to tell us what you've been told. Any frustration appearing in this isn't directed your way, but toward the lack of communication from the dev team. Perhaps a nudge to those upstairs on an update may be required?

i would say with a bit of luck, Mac users will be able to play come easter, and i'm being optimistic, given the immense lack of competence on bb's programmers part, and since even the windows version has problems, i would say that what i've just said is not that big of a stretch to imagine, plus, early january is out the window, so, you can see where this is all going…

i for one, and like many other have stated before me, believe bb owes Mac users not only an apology, but compensation (we lost so far, at the very least 400 gems, and a couple of new buildings and or new gens) for us missing the christmas event, because yes, the christmas event could have been played using the old flash version of the game and because bb said there would be a Mac version of the game upon release of the new version.

and no BB_Trafffer, you guys are not working hard to roll out anything as soon as possible, because working hard would have been before the release, now, is just doing something you owe and are behind on delivering it…

this is starting to look like a another cyberpunk :D :D :D :D

maybe bb or even ubisoft should be sued for this, maybe that would teach them not to promise something just to leave people hanging, we have politicians to do that, we dont need the gaming community to do it aswell.

BB knows exactly how many people are playing with Macs, Linux, or 32bit Windows installs because the TSO site should be capturing that information when you log in. It's trivial to have a tracker that records the OS and browser version in the log-in flow. They knew how many players this would affect and went ahead with this 'upgrade' anyway.

Also, it's been exactly a month since the last news on the TSO main page, and there are no updates or acknowledgements about the progress for nonWin64 players.

we all know that nothing just magically appears done, and the programmers are (at least we all hope so, but i wouldn't put my money on it though) working on this, but the thing is, this is a missed deadline on a promise by the game developers, and we already missed so much of the game, and will probably miss more and not because of us, but because bb didn't deliver on the promise made to the players.

Hello Andynnin!

We are currently transitioning from Flash to Unity - once done, you will be able to play again on your Mac via Web Browser. We are now approaching the live version’s release; the exact date of the release will be communicated in the near future, however, you can already test the Unity Test Version on our Test Server (https://www.tsotesting2.com/en).

hehehehehe, guess you've been away for quite some time now…
i'll give you a quick recap on things: basically, the unity version of the game to replace the flash original game, was released right before the easter event and we've been playing it ever since :)
oh wait, sorry buddy, my bad, that's the wrong recap, that's what BB told us it would happen :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

in reality, in december just before the xmas event, the game was supposed to have an in between version of the game, while the unity version was being finalized, but there was no in between version of the game, at least not one that worked for all. Mac, Linux and a lot of Windows users actually, were left out in the cold, because the game would not work for them.

after botching the first official realease of the game, it has been one failed launch after the other, and if you look at Trafffer's reply to your post, you'll see he wrote that the game would launch in the near future, but that's whats they've been saying since december, so i wouldn't put too much stock on it ;)

i would say come back in like 2 to 3 years time, maybe by then something has been released????

From yesterday I playing on Mac (Air M2) and I have no problem to enter ito game with Safari browser or Chrome, but I have a big problem because everything is so small that I can't read the letters. I can't read chat window or load army to generals, read quests... For example: imgur.com/a/IFrTkGs
How can I enlarge the letters?

The game is working now on macOS.

If you have an interface that's too small, please open the In-Game settings and turn off auto-scale (bottom option). Then you can resize the interface as you like.
