Could someone on Newfoundland let me know when the maintenance is finished and the system is up and running again.

I am currently getting the 'cannot update client' message and do not know if it is the bug or if the maintenance is still going on.

System was working fine yesterday and this morning before the maintenance.

Ah I haven't screwed it up then...thought it was just me that was getting all those stupid messages cos I accidentally downladed the client again. I have noticed something...that swf. file that caused the troubled before ( an adobe flash file) has been switched to play with gom player ( least on my pc it has) wonder if this has happened to others who deleted adobe ( as recommended) and that swf file has now become unworkable ??

Yeah that is exactly what has happened to me, I've tried the total reinstall but no luck, also the issue troubleshooting in the same thread. I'm a little worried that the client.swf file that is mentioned there is from the 'original' fix and may now have changed. Is it possible anyone who has got a system that is working could post the contents of the AppData\Local\Ubisoft\The Settlers Online\Client directory with the files sizes and dates so we can compare.

My client directory currently has
... AdobeAir (this is a subdirectory)
... META-INF (this is also a subdirectory)
client.exe 17/12/2020 10:40 174KB

I have tried copying in the client.swf (size 9231) but that does not solve the problem.

lol, shut down lappie, go home and start up again and magically now it starts working, exactly the same thing that happened on my first download on the test server and my first download on the Newfoundland server when we first used the client a few weeks back, will be interesting to see what files are in the directories now.

Hmm, I now have a client.swf file in the client directory timed at 19.19 which was the time I successfully got back in.

Just curious as to what programm the swf file is associated too now for other users....what was originally an adobe flash file is now showing as a gom player file on my pc and Im wondering if thats what the problem is.....

cat_flap
26.01.21, 18:19
Someone else mentioned this earlier and also said they had removed flash, I seem to remember that I got a message from adobe in early Jan saying that it would no longer be supported and that I should remove it. I decided not to. My swf files are still identified as Shockwave Flash files but are not associated with anything to open them.

Now that is interesting, looking at the properties on that file (client.swf) it shows as being created at 17.26 on the 26th of January, modified at 19.19 on the 26th of January and Accessed at 21.18 on 26th January. My local time is now 21.23 so I would assume all times shown have been translated to my local time, which put the creation time of the file as 17.26. At that time I was not trying to access or download Settlers, I had given up and was waiting until I got home. I retried login at 19.19 which lines up with the modified time.

I wonder if that creation time is the time that BB created the file (which is a few hours after maintenance finished) or maybe the time it was somehow downloaded onto my PC, which can only have happened with no intervention from me). Would be very interested to know what creation time is shown on someone else's client .swf file. I wonder if they created a new one and that is what has solved the problem.

... Just checked with one of my guildies, their file show a creation time the same as mine and he was able to access Settlers almost directly after maintenance, I wonder what is being done with file and how often it get recreated. Have to monitor it for a while to see what's going on .....

Got the same problem client can't be updated.

just looked at my files and noticed if i try and load the game the client folder date changes to the time i tried to log in but no other files change from when it must have been installed in December.

i wonder what they have changed today to cause it? is anyone getting in that had the error originally back in December?

Hi Spotty, try the fix suggested by Harlequin, the file has to go into the Users/'yourwindowloginname'/appData/Local/Ubisoft/The Settlers Online/Client directory.

This file was missing for me as well and my client wouldn't work. Somehow it got downloaded hours after the maintenance finished when I was not using Settlers and then when I tried to log in a while later everything was ok. Trying to work out what the heck is going on.

We have adapted, updated and corrected the additional file (SWF) in our instructions.
The guide now contains the new file and therefore a fix to the error "Your client could not be updated".
To play with the latest game version, you will need to download this SWF-file and add it to the noted folders.

1.Instructions (https://forum.thesettlersonline.com/threads/38014-LIVESERVER-New-downloadable-client?p=361209&viewfull=1#post361209) (with the updated file).

2.Direct link (https://ubistatic-a.akamaihd.net/0018/live/debug/00dedec37eed4434dcafba7bb0960159350f6d89.swf) to the new file.

I would like to apologise for this issue and thank everyone for their efforts to get everyone back in the game.

Would be good to note I had to delete an existing client.swf file in the Client Folder and then rename the downloaded file above: 00dedec37eed***4dcafba7bb0960159350f6d89.swf to Client.swf

I didn't read that part on other posts so initially the game still wouldn't load.

if you have tried to run and the game fails with ''cannot update client'', close the game down and

download the file from here (https://ubistatic-a.akamaihd.net/0018/live/debug/00dedec37eed4434dcafba7bb0960159350f6d89.swf)

rename the file to client.swf or get my version already renamed @ https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Sg1eogDTkYR_ZGC-hTNypBv4JjpQvzCI/view?usp=sharing

copy that file to the game install directory @ C:\Users\<yourloginname>\AppData\Local\Ubisoft\The Settlers Online\Client

now launch the game from within browser

It appears that it is. It suggests to me that there is more that is 'iffy' than just this client.swf file. My money is on something related to the log in and the system for some reason thinking that the person who is trying to download the file is not properly logged in. Frankly it's farcical.

Hi Hades....really need your help. When I downloaded the original standalone client before xmas event, I had this same problem. I followed your advice then and downloaded your swf file you posted then. I must've fluked it as it worked and have been going fine since.
After the recent update, I haven't had the same success. Please tell me where I am going wrong.
I am using Windows 10 -64 bit, I have tried through Edge and Chrome browsers.
I logged in through my Ubisoft account
First I uninstalled the standalone client and downloaded it again. I attempted to start the game to get the necessary folders created.
Secondly I downloaded the updated swf file from the post with the instruction guide. I renamed it client.swf
Next I went to the file location where the game is located C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Local\Ubisoft\The Settlers Online\Client
There was no swf file to replace only Adobe Air, META-INF, and Client.exe.
I copied the new client.swf file there.
Next I restarted the comp and logged in.
Clicked on Play Now and the game brings up the usual standalone client screen and then the same message "Your client could not be updated"
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou dje154....your suggestion seems to have worked. By naming the new swf file Client and not client.swf, it started straight away.

Interesting - there is a setting in Windows explorer to show or not to show the file name extensions, if it is a recognised extension.

This can lead to files getting double extensions (such as client.swf.swf) even though it is displayed in windows explorer as client.swf

I make sure the option to show extensions is enabled to avoid this problem.

On the login status issue I mentioned earlier. I have the habit of leaving my lappie on overnight, with the game logged in.

This morning my game standalone window was open and was working fine. I was able to send explorers, visit others islands, open mails etc etc. However when I looked at the forum (open in a windows tab) I found I had been logged out.

I checked my settlers homepage/download page tab, this also appeared to show me as being logged in. I refreshed this tab and it updated to show me as logged out and then logged me back in automatically (through the white Ubisoft window).

On return to the game standalone window I found that while I could still click on various items, the result was just a message window showing that an action was being attempted, but never completed. I closed the standalone window and restarted it from the blue 'Play Now' button. Standalone window opened and all was ok.

This seems to indicate to me that there is a good chance that one part of the system can think you are logged out while another part thinks you are logged in, which can no doubt lead to all sorts of fun and games. To avoid the problem I would think it would be best to log completely out and log completely back in again if you have the standalone window open for a relatively long period of time while it is not be actively used.

What may be going on if something attempts to update while the system is in this confused state I hate to imagine.......

You are right Cat_flap...I found that setting and went back into the file location and all the extensions have shown up. It would've read client.swf.swf making it impossible to work.

Hi,

I am fighting with this installation since December. Yesterday I tried to install everything on clear PC. Now the client requires Adobe Air - Why?
I downloaded the new client.swf and recorded it and client.exe files in Client directory - no success.
I am on Win 7 Pro 64 bit with Firefox 84.0.2 64 bit with all required updates and shits installed... I tried with Chrome but the results is the same.

Several times I posted about the problems I am facing but nobody answers. It seems that the moderators/support guys/whoever is responsible do not care.
I am wondering how many players have given up the game...

I am tired of fighting...

Do you have the Adobe Air file in the Client directory that comes with the client download?

Could you please post a screenshot/photo with the error message?
