Blocking is used to reduce losses on adventure maps and in some cases, when clearing your main island.
When you defeat a leader camp in a sector all the other bandit camps in that sector are destroyed. Usually you need to defeat a few camps first to get to the leader camp, causing you to lose some troops along the way. If you tried to just send your general straight to the leader without taking out the bandits first, he will get distracted if he passes through the red square of any camps on route. That red square disappears while the badits are fighting though, so if you send a general to attack those bandits, another general can slip by and get the to the leader that way.
There are 2 types of block, one is when you send 1 Recruit with a general this block is very short, the Recruit is lost and the general can't be used for 4 hours. The second type you send a certain mix of troops which take upto around 3 minutes for the battle to be decided. In this case your main general can get by 2 or three camps that are being blocked in this way, kill the leader and save all other generals from taking any losses, if he can kill leader quickly enough.
Placement of Generals, timing and the types of troops you send are very precise, so you need to use a guide. Get it wrong and you can lose more troops than if you hadn't tried to block.
And be very wary of trying it if the server is showing any signs of lag!
