As the end was near of the anniversary event came near I made cakes from all the event items I had, as they would be replaced with buffs.

Where did u get this weird idea that this is a bug or technical issue?
Every single event the (more than) past few years had conversion done during maintenance- did u really expect this to suddenly be changed and then bugged at the same time?
