At this stage the test server is obsolete, in my opinion. You should update directly the live server. I do not think it can be any worse than it is now (LE: or can it ?)
Furthermore, the issues the test server had prior to go live where solved less than 10% in live server.
it can always be worse- so at least running update on test first means live servers arent broken any more than they are - or will be rebroken in a future update after "fixing" this mess
