To be fair, I think there should be a time limit. For example you could 'recall' for 1 minute or such... then after that he's too far away and won't hear you :)

if all else fails make it cost 1 gem, that should go down well with whoever wants to sell them

not sure when selling recipes for gems for advanced provision house was removed :X
but yeah, 1 gem for return sounds reasonable.

I think there should be a free limited amount of time (like 1 minute) but I'd also agree that 1 gem seems reasonable.
