Ranking Table Out of Action Again

As you are probably aware, the ranking table is being worked on again. I have posted below a translation of the German frontpage announcement:

Ranking page is out of order.

Dear settlers, By late Friday night, the ranking updates went down. The engineers have been notified, a placeholder graphic was recorded and put in place. All your donated balloons still count, only the graphic is not currently working properly. We ask for your patience. All of you have a nice weekend.

Give him chance to have a coffee first. If he can't come up with a good graphic, can he not just use Excel instead?

Forget the graphic we would be just as happy with the ranking table as text only.

I looked at the German thread Sto_Helit, and I 100% agree with the player who suggested that we have full transparency now. Show us how many balloons it is! Show us how many balloons we have donated! This is ridiculous.

Regardless of where we are in the rankings, we need to just continue to donate as much as we can.

No reason to slow down.

If you need a reason to create even more than usual, pretend that we are last =]

We keep going to the bitter end and aim for those 600 gems! Every last balloon counts. If we win by 1 balloon, we have still won! :D

BB seems to have a way with events. These problems with the score board has made a lot of people stop donating balloon over the weekend and as a result, we have hardly moved any close to 150 %. That in turn has caused quite a few players to just give up and they are now venting their frustration in the chat, making even more players give up. I hope you are happy now BB. Yet another event that you managed to screw up.

Every few hours, probably. Not in real time.

I think this was a failed event from the start! This event replaced the football event from this time last year where u could collect event resources and buy items from the shop (A friary was available! any one remember how many footballs it cost?), anyway with no event shop items on offer here its not appealing to most to make an effort to donate balloons.

They paired weaker servers with others so at the very least every server could make 100% and get the headquarters from settlers 2 as a minimum reward. They (BB) obviously don't worry about inactive accounts, which must amount to at least 20% of each server. (well the 3 euro ones anyway).

I remember not long bk we were given 250 gems and a few other things just for Valentines day! How times have changed!

For those like me, that are still having problems accessing the rankings, please be patient.
It's a technical issue that is kinda hard to explain, but I'll try a bit.

We humans use readable names to access stuff (like images) on the internet. The internet translates that to numbers (ip-adress), but to do that it needs a mapping.
That mapping is not globally in one spot, but exists on every router on the internet, so each request can be handled in an appropriate way. The routers do update there mapping by asking their neighbours if there are updates. If somehow a name should be translated to a different ip adress it will be pushed to a few routers and then it will slowly spread out around the world.

Well this is what happened to the server where the ranking image is stored, and the button is disabled because the image can't be found.

(This explanation isn't 100% accurate, but the explanation is complex enough as it is)

This is not something bb can fix or speed up in anyway, but hopefully it will soon work for all of us again

Are you trying to say that one specific DNS-server broke?

Yes, I agree, event is very bad. Rewards are terrible and to get them you have to burn incredible huge resources. For example I burned into balloones 20 or 30 thousands of horses, which I do not need and then we got voucher with 250 horses. Big LOL. And 100 gems we get every week for logging so using huge resources to get 100 gems and some building for 50 people is really stupid :). Still I burned lot of resources (for example all I had in Star Menu) just because I have seen that some people really wanted to fight with other servers.

Yes and no. Yes the problem is related to DNS, but no its not one specific DNS-server that broke. What happens is that not all DNS servers have been updated to the new ip adress. And those of us that still have a disabled "ranking list" button are connected to DNS servers that still need to get the new mapping.

Not so simple. Ranking list is served through Ubisoft content delivery network that is provided by Limelight cloudservices. There are multiple servers that is hosting that image and probably depending your geographical location and ISP you are directed to the closest one.

I have some problems with the graphics on the mainpage.

The graphics in the newstab dont show anything, see picture:

When i do a right mouseclick and copy URL-link of the picture and copy/paste in a new browsertab it says:
Cant find static14.cdn.ubi.com

Second Problem is the rankinglist:
Some of my guildies can see the Rankinglist again, i cant.
I delete my cachememory and tried 3 different Internet Broswers.
Flash 11,8,800,97 installed
Still the same problems.

Hi, all!

Thank you for the feedback that there's still some issues with the DNS-- I have reported this and it should be fixed quick-smart. I'll come back and let you know when I've been given the green-light that it's functioning as it should again.

Hi guys,

You need to scroll all the way to the bottom of the event text to 'release' the ranking list button! If that still does not help, there may be an issue with your computer connecting to the local DNS server, not with your browser cache. If this is the case, it should be fixed within the next day when it is refreshed.

you should have a local DNS file somewhere on your disk. it's a text file. you can edit it with both the name and ip of the dns your having problems with and your browser will use this for that address instead of the online dns table you normally use. I'm afriad you will have to search on the net for exactly how to do this as it's been that long i've forgotten the precise details of how.

That'd be the hosts file in windows/system32/drivers/etc/ however I'm not sure this is something standard users should be trying, might be better to just wait this one out

Yeah, only for people that know what they are doing. I don't want to mess my computer up for the sake of a graphic that isn't working for a short while.

Better still, for those that are on the IT side, could they post updated tables if the rest of us are having problems?

I did start a thread specifically for people to post updated tables in it :)
but if they go down all across the game like at the weekend no-one can post any.
