Yeah I noticed that I got too few map fragments today. Guess they really are incapable of introducing a bonus event without messing things up.
Here's a stack of recent loots with the new explorer. All of them are long searches so something is not right when looking at the last lot.

What exactly is your point? That random isn't predictable? I'm not clear on what you are trying to say.
I expect that the skill that gives me 90 % more map fragments actually give me 90 % more map fragments for all slots and not just the first one. As it stands, it seems like the skills do not apply to the second slot for the new explorer. Or to quite the very first post in this thread: "Firstly skills not applying to the bonus / 3rd stack of map fragments".
But for example a geologist with a 'find bigger' and a 'find two' skill only gets the 'bigger' bonus on the first find, not the second. That's well known. I don't see how this is any different. I can be said that it always should be on both finds and that's a different issue but in this case I would say that at least it's consistent.
Then perhaps that changed with a maintenance a while back because I remember originally it wasn't the case. And I've never gotten 2 surplus from one search even though I have the same chances as you. If it has been corrected that's nice to know. In which case I'd agree with consistency being better and that makes it weird that the explorers that return multiple adventures have such a huge difference in map fragments.
First of all, the "his" will be replaced in one of the next game versions. Thank you for reminding us! :)
Second of all, the feedback received regarding the loot of the Intrepid Explorer has been passed on and an investigation followed. I will try to explain the finds below.
Every time an explorer goes on an adventure search, a loot table is generated to determine which reward is obtained.
In the case of the Intrepid Explorer, an unskilled one will generate a loot table composed of two loot slots when sent on an adventure search, because of the "Intrepid skill"(let's call it that).
When an Intrepid Explorer with the Wild Determination skill finds map fragments, a modifier is applied, increasing the amount of map fragments found. This skill (like all skills) only applies to the first loot slot. If the skill is maximised (90%), the original loot generated for this slot is multiplied by 1.90 and the total amount is displayed within the first loot slot.
When the Trouble-seeker skill gets triggered for an Intrepid Explorer, a third loot slot is displayed within the generated loot. This slot is not affected by any other skills. The adventure search loot returned by the Intrepid Explorer can hold a maximum of 3 loot slots.
As a result, it is now confirmed that everything is working as intended.
Thank you for the clarification BB_Ravel. I was getting mixed information which wasn't matching to my observations. This makes the rules being applied very clear.
Hey Ravel, cool beans on the text fix and cheers for the attempt. Thing is, the Intrepid can't be working as intended.
For a few reasons.
Like the Conscientious Geologist the Intrepid Explorer comes fresh out of the box with 'find two' ability, in this case "twice as many rewards" on adv searches, built in.

The Geo, if skilled for it, should and does find two fast producing mines and larger deposits at once. The Intrepid Explorer, if skilled for it, can find and should be able to consistently find extra map frags in at least the first two built-in slots but she doesn't always do that.
See some of Zotamedu's images, but the second slots rather than the third:
And Bluesavanah's original post, on the Very Long search each slot can find 20 or 35 MF (+ book-skills bonus if appropriate.):
It looks in these like the built-in second slot is only behaving as it should when the third is active.
So while the behaviour of the third book-skill-created slot may or may not be working as intended (Drawing a complete blank on which way the Conscientious Geo was fixed with his 'find an extra deposit' book-skill) it appears the second slot on the Intrepid does indeed have issues, as did the second fast mine find of the C. Geo. when he was new.
Fixing the Intrepid's hiccupy second slot to bring her in line with the C. Geo. seems a lot more consistent with her description, and with the behaviour of the other fancy 'finds two' specialist's ability, than the other option of nerfing part of her built-in skill which is what would be required to make "This skill (like all skills) only applies to the first loot slot." accurate. That whole quote could actually use a review since her third slot may also still be hinky and does bear double (triple?) checking.
Picked these up here and there over the last little while:
Conscientious Geologist ~ Finds his 2 deposits, skill bonuses applied to both. (Live game)
Spoiler
Experienced Explorer, Very Long Adventure Search ~ Finds the bonus adventure search slot, 'find extra Map Fragments' bonus also applied. (Live game)
Spoiler
Savage Scout, Long Adventure Search ~ Finds the bonus adventure slot, both slots 'find extra MF'. (Test server)
Spoiler
Jolly Geologist ~ Multiple bonuses active. (Test server)

It looks like the Intrepid just has the same issue others did when new things appeared and were buggy or confused, those issues were fixed and now it's her turn.
Long story short, the Intrepid should work like everyone else and if she's skilled for it she should be able to find extra MF in both the second and third slots. Not just the first.
