how cool that you have pet chickens! Why did you choose to have chickens instead of the usual cats/dogs?

just to be different i suppose, we grow our own veg so they are also used as a natural pest control against snails, slugs, Caterpillars also but they also like to eat the veg so that's why they have a big run to keep them off the veg but we pick the pests and feed the girls them, their eggs when they lay in spring/summer are delicious so my kids, friends and neighbors say truly free range eggs now and a lot cheaper than the shops lol, my sons love them as their friends have normal household pets so their friends think its cool they have chickens. they are so friendly and have their own characters they can be funny to watch, i was going to get silkies type chickens but heard about these ex battery hens so thought these had a hard start to life the deserved a better rest of their lives.
i did want ducks also but thought they might be a little bit noisy for the garden so maybe when were eventually at the top of the list for a allotment we will be moving the 2 girls over there and getting them some more friends and maybe a cockerel to keep them company, hopefully i will get ducks then also :) and we will also have a lot more room to grow our veg.
