I guess you mean buffing the chain, not the goldmine itself? The buffs on mines only give faster yield, due to double output, and so doubling the depletion-rate, as fas as I've understood.

You can also upgrade your masons, but you will never see more than one settler working in the same building.
Only one settler can work at a mason. You need to build more masons, so the unemployed settlers can get jobs and begin providing you with stones.
Gold mines are expensive to build, and so is the rest of the production chain for gold coins.
There are only 300 gold ore in my goldmines, but it costs 1400 of marble and hardwood, and 1500 tools....
