It was promotion time again. All the prefects were lined up outside the School Governors office, waiting nervously for their interview. They all knew there was only one space for the New Senior Prefects position.
The door swung open and a lofty fellow called for the first Prefect to enter the room.
The Chair of the Governors looked over to the Prefect. "I'm going to ask you some questions".
The Prefect braced himself.
"OK", said the Chair "Who knocked down the walls of Jericho".
Without so much as a by your leave the Prefect jumped up and exclaimed, "Please sir it was not me sir, I did not do it sir".
The Chair of the Governors reached for the telephone and called for the Prefects Head Boy to come to the room. He duly arrived.
The Chair of the Governors, looking perplexed spoke to the Head Boy. "I have just asked this prefect who knocked down the walls of Jericho and his response was, it was not me sir".
Again and without a moment to reflect the Head Boy jumped up. "Sir I have known this Prefect for some time now and if he said it was not him, then it was not him, sir".
The Chairman slumped into his chair and rang for the Headmaster. He arrived quickly.
The chair looking forlorn explained to the Head Teacher. "I asked this prefect who knocked down the walls of Jericho and he replied it was not him. I summoned the Head Boy and explained this to him. He replied that he has known the Prefect for some time and he is a truthfull chap".
The was a pause whilst the Headmaster looked at the two boys.
"Does it really matter who knocked them down", he stated, "surely we can have a jumble sale to raise the funds to rebuild them".
