Animals 8 directions, settlers 4 directions

Not sure if this should go in here, but...

Why is it that animals can walk in 8 directions across the map while settlers (and roads) are limited to 4.
    Seems pretty silly to me.

    The Animals swim as well!

On a serious note though. I'm not sure. Someone has mentioned this in game about settlers moving in a zig-zag movement, which decreases production time.

Not sure if the implementation of settlers actually using roads will come into play. I think they are just for decorative purposes as if settlers were to be assigned to roads, depending on how you place them, it could increase or decrease production time a lot. Which in turn would make certain resources build higher than others and it'd be a mess.

Why would walking zig zag improve production time?
Thought that walking on a strait line was the shortest road..

No, I meant now, if you watch your settlers, they move in a zig zag formation. Unless they've fixed that now.

Haha, yes Ados. I've had that happen to quite a few of my settlers. At one point I had about 10 of them running at that speed at once, was hilarious to watch.

when I used to play settlers II on the PC they had to have roads / paths to get to places, and sometime if there was no direct route it would take ages to get anywhere, They also only travelled in 4 directions, but can't remember about the animals (it was about 15 yrs ago )

my guess would be that the animals don't actually interact with the world, so that's why they can go in any direction as well as through buildings as well as on the water, the the settler people need to path find their way around the buildings and other object that block their way and because o fthe layout of the world it's easier and quicker to get the settlers to walk in this way.

I haven't noticed any difference in travel time when my settlers are walking across paths against walking in the rough, I guess this is a little detail to be added later.
