Since the most recent server outage, I seem to have lost the sound effects...there's no battle noises, incidental music when attacking etc, no sound effects when applying a buff to a building.

Have you checked the settings to make sure they're turned on?
it's in a little puul-down menu with a cog below your avatar if you're not sure
