This is a quick, in-depth guide on how to create a desktop icon for The Settlers Online.
I've only written this for windows and can't be bothered to stick partitions on for Linux/Snow Lepord
Sorry for quality of the screenshots lol I used paint :P
Ok so lets get to it!
Step 1 - Create the shortcut
Start by right clicking on your desktop, selecting the 'New' section and clicking on 'Shortcut'
A window will appear like so.
Enter the following URL in to the text bar: http://www.thesettlersonline.com/en/play Click 'Next'
Please note the shortcut will only take you straight to the game if you use the 'log me in automatically' function
Name your gorgeous little bundle of joy! Click 'Finish'
And BOOM! The icon LIVES!
Please Note: The icon will appear the same as your default browser e.g. Google Chrome/Opera/Firefox/Internet Explorer
Step 2: Nifty little icon
Now windows being its lovely little self won't use .png files as icons so it has to be converted. This is quite easily done thanks to a little tool on the interwebs and some fansite goodness from the German Settlers website (http://static3.cdn.ubi.com/settlers_.../DSOWebKit.zip)
Once this has downloaded unzip it to your desktop
Open the file and have a little look about and pick the icon you want and keep it in mind
(You can use any .png/.gif/.jpeg to create a icon with the web tool)Next open a new Internet Browser and go to http://www.converticon.com
Click 'Get Started' A file browser window will open, now navigate to the fansite folder you unziped on your desktop and to were the icon you would like is kept. For this tutorial I'm going to use the larger avatars.
If nothing shows up in your folder change the file type to look for in the folder browser this will be in the bottom right of the browser window
Once you've selected the picture you want click 'Open' you should see this window
Click the 'Export' button to continue to the next stage or browse to change the icon.
Once the file has been exported you will get a size selection menu
However!!! This seems a tad buggy and dosn't tend to save the file correctly when you select one size, so I select the following sizes and it works fine.
Now 'Save As' the icon and simply save it in a file that wont get modified or moved (Best place is My documents) Don't rename it if you can help it too, it seems to annoy it somewhat.Step 3: Selecting your icon
Right mouse button on The Settlers Online icon and click 'Change Icon'
When the Change Icon box opens click 'Browse' and navigate to the folder you saved your icon and open it, once its open click 'Ok' and then again on the properties window.TaaDaaaaa!
Your icon should be finished and ready to use!
So hope you like this, its a bit picture heavy but not everyone is as able as others in the computer skills department!
Hats of to http://punklabs.com for the icon converter.
Regards,
Rogan.
