500 new settlers

I just "won" 500 settlers in an adventure. Can I add a part of them and save the rest or will I lose the remaining part I dont add?

All settlers for wich you have no room stay in the star menu. For instance if you have room for 300 settlers and you use the +500 settlers, then all 300 spots will be filled, and 200 settlers will stay in the star menu.
