Veteran general bad?

I done "witch of the swamp" 2 times, following sidv's guide. on first camp it says i wont loose any recruits and i havent. until now.
i tryed my new veteran general, and thought might as well go with 250 reqruits since i wont loose anyone.
And instead i lost 19 recruits. Bad luck or bad general?

if you attack a camp with recruits, the bandits can always hit back and will always damage you.

you have to attack the first camp with cavelary

You are right.. i missread the guide. i should have sent 200 Cavalry, not recruits :P
Giving the veteran a second chance then.

The veteran is good, but as we discovered on test there are a lot of fights where it makes no real difference because you were already winning in 1 round. It does reduce causalties a bit when a fight extends for longer, or 200 cavalry couldn't quite do the job.

having the option or ability of sending 250 troops to batle, dosen't mean nessesarilly that you have to do it.
