While finishing some quests today I accidentally clicked the "Finish quest instantly" button thus using the gems I had been saving to buy something from the trader when I had enough! I find this quite frustrating that it uses your gems with out asking for confirmation on this action. I find this to be a problem and it really needs to be fixed.
