also just another idea (its something i personally would want but not sure if too many other people would see it the same way) is equipment slots for generals which you can say have armor and weapons and that... which you can gain through adventure drops, trading or smithing ( i always want smithing).

and only say "veteran status generals can equip the best pieces of equipment

HP improvement would definitely be great. And more damage wouldn't hurt (OK it would, but not him)
