There is no best. Each units has its own use depending on the battle it's involved in.
Read through to the various combat guides for information on each battle
If at first you don't succeed, sky-diving is not for you.
In general; use cavalry to kill archers, archers to kill melee, and melee to kill dogs. Never use cavalry if the enemy also has cavalry/dogs. But there is nothing that is always the best.
