We want to avoid accidentally deleting that important mail and having to annoy support to get it back.

No thanks, already had horrors where a heavy click has deleted something important. Dread to think what havoc a 'nuke all' button would wreak.

Perhaps just an open all button then?

Something like the postal addon in world of warcraft comes to mind, you open all and the mail with important contents remains.
