Maybe you were visiting the island of a friend? Because then it can also gives you the 24 hours message.
(Normally the "trade"-option is disabled, but one of my guild member had the same issue a few days ago)
I'm not aware of any other reason why you shouldn't be able to trade with your friends after an extended away.
