Maybe I'm out of line here, but i've seen some things that are really bugging me. E.g. how is it possible that I've only got 6 copper ore after a full afternoon mining (4 mines) with the copper smelters off? Are there other facilities using copper ore?
Same with iron ore. Am I missing something?

that is just my point. I had 4 copper mines and 4 copper smelters. The smelters were inactive so normally they don't make bronze. The mines were fully active and still after 7 hours I just had 6 copper ore in my warehouse
Try checking this guide, it should give you some additional insight as to how to view what is using up resources.
Hopefully that will allow you to answer your question.
