Paths?

Do paths make any difference to the game, or are they just for show?
Also I am level 43 and can build carts, but are carts just used for cannons? Or do settlers use them to transport goods.

Paths are only for show, but is very usefull to figure out how to use island to full.
They are only for canons so far. If it will get any other usage only BB knows.
