The Lord Marshall's Plea
It was the first morning of spring and the first warm rays of the sun crept slowly through the morning mist; the last remnants of a stormy wintry season. The winter had been long and hard for the Lord Marshalls settlement, many of his citizens had perished during the last and worst blizzard of the year. Those unfortunate souls who dared to venture out despite the darkened skies that had warned of the storms coming. The lack of supplies as winter stretched on had shortained supplies to a point where he had been forced to ration out their meager stores in hope of lasting until springs warm relief would finally come.
The loss of his people stung him deeply, but the rumors of wence the storm had come caused a fire to burn within his veins. He would avenge the spirits of those who had been taken from them. The rumors had started slowly, and at first he had dismissed them as being nothing more than frightened wives tales to keep children from wondering out alone at night. The Lord Marshall had been in error.
One of his best explorers had returned today successfully from his search for clues, a detailed map of the witches nearby island lie stretched across his desk in his manor. He knew now that the rumors were true, the fabled witch of the swamp was real, and he now had a target for his rage. The Lord Marshalls best generals had not done well through the winter, having been wounded fighting against the bandits that infested the newly settled island's borders. That was not the least of the Lord Marshalls worries, the long winter had also drained his coffers as he spread his coin and gems hoping to feed and maintain his once prosperous population.
That is exactly why the Lord Marshall had ventured out as soon as the snows began to melt. That was exactly why he was now overlooking his city as the morning light spread across it and his eyes searched desperately for signs of movement. There were other rumors, legends even. This one in particular seemed to be the only hope for his blighted lands. The wishing well....
The Lord Marshall shook his head as he turned away determined to see if the rumors were true, he had found the well people had spoken of. If it were true, the well could grant him a single wish and he knew exactly what he needed, or more importantly who he needed. He needed a strong and powerful general to lead his troops into battle. He needed one who could quickly organize his armies and defeat the witch of the swamp as quickly as possible, before she had the chance to reak more havic amongst his citizentry.
He approached the well with his offering, the last of his stash of valuable gems. They weren't enough to tempt the right man into helping him, but with the wells help maybe they would suffice. He kneeled at the base of the old well and a sense of forboding washed over him. These gems could go a long way to helping his people, he could be making a grave mistake, but it was a chance he would have to take. He placed is chest reverently on the ground before the well and opened its lid. The priceless saphires sparkled in the morning light...
"I wish for aid in finding a battle hardened general to lead my troops against the darkness that fast encroaches, I must defeat the witch before she lay claim more of my peoples lives. I bring this offering, oh ancient and powerfull well of wishes; hear my plea!"
A stregnth and warmth flowed through his veins, washing away the morning chill and grief, and giving him hope that his wish had been heard. In his final act of determination, he emptied the gems reverently into the seemingly bottomless well, rose, and headed back down the mountains.
Notes*
I know it is above the value, but with the wishing wells help I could soon have enough gems for the BHG. I know this isn't exactly the format you asked for, but I had to take a little artistic license. If breaking these conditions voids my wish, thats ok as well. It was fun writing anyways![]()
