    Depleted and too many deposits?

    How is this possible?
First the system message: "A Iron ore deposit has become depleted."
then the system message: "Your geologist did not find a new Iron ore deposit, because you already have too many deposits of this type."

If the mine wasn't depleted when you sent out an earlier geologist, he won't find it.
Only when you send one out after the depletion will he be successful.

    You're welcome.
Basically, the outcome of the search is decided the moment you send him out, you just have to wait before you actually see it so if something depletes mid-search, he won't know a thing about it.

Many many times my geologist finds a marble deposit that was depleted in mid-search: marble deposit A depleted, sent geo X , marble deposit B depleted, geo X finds deposit B.

While I'm not 100% sure, I'm pretty confident that the deposit to find is choosen 1 hour before the actual find.
This means that everything with a search time shorter then 1 hour, is determined when sending the geologist on it's way.

I've used this assumption for several months now and it seems to hold.

Jolly geologists can be sent out searching before a deposit is depleted and they will find it. I do that every day.

Normal geologists will only find deposits if they where depleted before sending them out.
