Collectibles are placed the same way as roads, between buildable locations.
They can be found immediately adjacent to buildings, but not behind them (although a tall building like the Trade Office may still hide them - due to the size).
And it appears that they can only appear where it is possible to build a road, which does apply to the hidden locations posted here (the "Build Street" tool highlights when you hover over them). It's likely the "cosmetics" covering more space than the actual object, like the Friary.

We shall search our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall find them on the beaches, we shall find them on the landing grounds, we shall find them in the fields and in the streets, we shall find them under the hills; we shall never surrender.

This was posted on the .net forum. (source: http://forum.thesettlersonline.net/t...pawn-locations)

    I'll repost it here.

These are tips for finding the Collectibles.

If you have a FlowerBed or some sort of decoration that takes up 1x1 grid space. Either from your star menu (misc) or on the map.

Click to place it. or click to move it (using move tool).

It will highlight all the green area on the map. Screen capture this and keep it handy. It will help you find collectibles on the island because they'll only spawn where the green spots area.

It's best to screen capture this when you have your collect all quest complete first. This way it's a clean clear map.

Next time you get a collect all quest. Just start looking at all the green hot spots from your little screen capture cheat sheet.

Enjoy the tip! :-) (I came up with it myself.)

Another tip is buy decorations from TO or gem store and plug all the green spots up on the map. The more you fill up the better. This will reduce the spots you have to look for where they'll spawn. Plug up holes for those annoying places. Or just plug up holes for an entire sector and you'll never have to look at that sector again.

Cut down all the trees! that will also help. :-)

Actually, they're more like decorations that is 'shifted' to where the roads are. There are a lot of decorations that have 'shifted' placements. You know this because they have arrows to readjust. So they appear to follow roads. but in fact they're taking up 'buildable' 1x1 grid tiles. If you fill up the map with 1x1 decorations, this will reduce where they will spawn. In fact it might cause them not to spawn at all. Maybe they'll go into your star menu for free. :-) I've never tested this theory out but it seems to be the case.

Cheers everyone for the Tips n' Tricks and further hiding places, I started sorting a post for them all here yesterday but got hung up. I'll try to get everything updated today.

RonPope, we've had that here as well:

    it's a great tip.

The difference with Roads, if I've followed everything correctly, is that "Build a Road" will highlight extra spots a Decoration misses so while it can't be used as an overlay it can light up inside a Mountain and between two abutting buildings or Decs where Collectibles can still manage to squeeze in. If you take a spin around the Island with it you can get an idea of where things may turn up in the future.

Cool. Have linked to this from my common questions guide

One suggestion, some of the answers to the more common questions (like finding cauldrons on adventures) are a little bit hidden in with other details. Could be worth breaking out the answers to some of the biggest problems or making them stand out more.

They are definitely placed where roads can also be. Try hovering the Build Street tool over collectibles, it's spot on.
Also, it is possible to place an object around a collectible - as if the collectible was a road - although an area is darkened and the collectible does block a spot for a 1x1 object (which makes the trick with the decoration possible).
As for the decorations, the same thing applies to them as with buildings: Collectibles can be placed in front of them, but not behind them. In fact, it seems to be the case with any objects on "buildable" locations (including rocks and cliffs, which can cause the hidden collectibles).
