This just adds a load of rubbish to the star menu, give us the option of not needing it to level the explorer up, those that want it can still use it, but it just adds more clicks for stuff I don't even need

Despite this being raised in the test phase, it didn't change then and it's never going to change now: they're locked into it now and it would impossible to change anything in skill tree without giving everyone a free reset of all their geologists/explorers which I don't see happening.
Wouldn't be so bad if they just dumped it into the mayor house direct instead of mailing it and adding it to star

That would be generally nice, but then support/the help chat would be flooded with "I didn't get my hidden stash bonus".
I would be happy if they just let me delete them from the mail window
