If they wanted to limit the rate of the science progression, they should have made the books more expensive or made them take longer to produce but the price really really need to be constant.
I think the mechanics are great - makes it cheap early when it's really needed and expensive later when this has become an endgame grinding.

The ramp is way too fast. I think they tried to balance it around only having three geoglogists and three explorers. Few people have only six to spend their books on. Furthermore, there's a lot of rather useless skills one have to put books into in order to make it to more useful things further up the scale. The whole concept of a grind is bad game design. If something is a grind, then the desiners has failed.

Book building is not a 'grind'. It's a mechanic that lets you choose at frequent intervals (every day or more often) what kind of book you want to build and how you want to improve a specialist.

Also, it is important to not think about 'all or nothing' for upgrading a specialist. Each upgrade has an immediate effect. Each effect is of course small, but the cumulation of these minor improvements over time adds up. This is the entire basis of the game.

The costs for books is also not that expensive. I've easily upgraded 6 already to full, and well on my way to upgrading the next 9. This is not meant to be finished within a few days, but rather, keep us busy for year(s) (over the length of our entire stay with this game).

Agreed that there area lot of 'useless' skills (especially once you upgrade all the way, the lower level upgrades have 0 impact). This is a valid point to suggest there is a flaw in the design. I think they ran out of ideas on what 'bonuses' to give without being over-powered or over-repetitive (i.e., 10 ways to decrease the same search time).

But, back to main topic: The new UI, albeit a bit clumsy looking, at least is informative, so this is good.

For me it's a grind.. I'm mostly piling up manuscripts til I get a specialist I want to skill up.
End-gaming need to be "a grind" (til something new and better comes) or new players will never have a chance to catch up..

It's the years part that's the problem. I quickly takes a week or more to get a codex. So that's over a year for just the few specialists you get from the tavern. If they ever add the science system for the generals they must reset the progress. Regarding the price, I guess you are aware that the cumulated cost for a codex is roughly 1400 gold coins. Five manuscripts for a tome is too much. They really should have left it at three and it would have been reasonable but still bad mechanic. Not the worst in the game but bad nonetheless.

Also, I quite like that the even the forum is buggy so after awhile you cannot write anymore so to finish the post, I had to post it and then edit it.

    Hello esko1122,

Please do not use profanity on the forum, even if you partly self censor it
