Same thing that happened to pvp... Was filed in the trash compartment.
Apparently it was more important to give us collectibles and achievements because that's what everyone suggested. Oh, wait…

I heard somewhere their implementation did not work as well as they wanted to (a bug was found during testing I think) that led to instability. So probably requires a bit more work.
Or they worked out it didn't cost enough for the extra space
Would it be possible to get some sort of reply from BB on this before the football event? I would like to know if it's going to happen or not? That way I can work out how many lvl 6 farms I can have, if the extra space is not going to happen I'll pull more farms.

Perhaps, thou I think you had to spend about 20K gems to buy out all buffs and clear everything..
The bug was "zone lockouts" because the revamped map lost some previous buildable space.. Probably nothing they couldn't fix, but maybe not without putting in some more effort (than they could/wanted atm/so far).
In all seriousness I suspect BB have abandoned this idea. lv6 buildings, improved silos, epic work yards and the saturating the game with Frozen Manors from mystery boxes all seem to be ways of approaching the space issue from a less problematic perspective.
