I have to say, I understand the outage itself was out of their control, but there are things available to keep servers running like UPS's - Im pretty sure there are some available for large servers, no?

You are assuming BB are using large servers jollyfog ;-)
BB is using Ubisoft servers and services...
My point still stands.
Although here's a scary thought for you. Ubisoft generated revenues in excess of 1billion euro in 2013 (the last financial period this is available for). And yet they run this size of online business out of a single data centre....... No wonder those gerbils get tired.
Ever thought it is possible the lines were out, and not the servers themselves ?

UPS gives enough power to shut down the servers in a controlled manner.
Diesel generators could keep a moderate sized data center running for few hours.
To keep a data center up and running 100% will need a small power plant.
And all this has no use if the connectivity to internet is down.
just seems weird for an online game not to have precautions in place, but, meh...
We at least got compensation for it, I can now start making cavalry like crazy.....
