Not really true. All my explorers began before the event ended. None of them brought any event resource back.

After an extremely silly dev update suggesting "bonus footballs and collectibles" was intentional and of benefit to players (how?) rather than being a flaw in the design of the event, it never actually happened!
Are you a casual or part-time player? Don't want a chatty guild or expect lots of support?
And do you want the chance to earn a few guild coins but don't want to be forced to do guild quests on a daily basis?
