This has been reported and it's currently being investigated.
As far as I understand, it's just a graphical issue. Maybe we can call it a tournament on your island, held in order to inspire settlers to join the brave troops?

I have noticed at times that having the mouse pointer over certain map locations I see messages related to quests as if I had the quests open.... like it's a layer 'bleeding through' - I wonder if this is something similar.

Things on my home island are getting out of order fast, guess i should do less expeditions and give soldiers a proper rest

Should be visible now clearing cache didnt solve the problem, only claiming colony finished that fight

Its happened when you return you island before the fight was over. Every time when I did so, this happens. Also this fighting was visible everywhere (on colonial island, on friend island).
