Add "Online" tab to frends list.
There even is a empty button/tab for it under "Guild". So no redesign of ui needed.
Write "Online" on it and filter those with green dots there. Possibly sort the list by alphabet not level?
Boom. Done.

I really really like this idea, but worry about unintended effects of it. Right now it seems like my chat 'freezes' (I'm in the middle of typing something and the cursor moves somewhere else to I have to click the chat window again to resume typing) at odd times. I assume it is updating something (perhaps the Green lights of who is online?)

I would worry that if they added this function (which would be very helpful indeed), that it might result in more lag or more freezes/resets etc. If they can make it work without causing any problems though, I'm all for it

the freezing started about the time of the xxl update. green dots have been in the game for years.

it's not freezing, it's loss of focus.

yes, a minor fix to catch the element, that has focus, before updating and after setting it back... is in fact very annoying
